Magical Scrolling

Today’s episode, “Magical Scrolling” is on Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today’s episode is two basically polar opposite segments. First up is all things Disney: Magic Keys, our favorite latest Disney+ channel shows and movies, and Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience—yay or nay? Then we switch over to the less pleasant topic of internet trolls and the toll they can exact if you get caught up in a cyber-argument with one. This was actually supposed to be the topic for the entire episode. Honestly, this is how conversations over coffee go…and we’re not hating that we talked just as much about Disney than we did jerky trolls who wouldn’t say boo to their own shadow in real life away from their computer keyboard. We wrap up the episode with a list of days you can celebrate in September. Oh and we throw in a bit of a lament about summer, heat, and pray for the onset of Fall. Would it be an episode during summer if we didn’t?

So have you been back to Disneyland (any resort) since they reopened? Have you used the new “Magic Keys” system? Paid extra to get on a ride sooner? (Honestly it smacks a bit of nickel and diming, but it’s so soon in the process it’s hard to say. Plus we think we’re just jealous. Because we sure do miss our Disneyland!) As for the Galactic Starcruiser experience one of us is totally for it and the other…meh…not so much. At least until the Keys are obtained, there’s Disney+ content that brings the parks and rides into our homes through the fantastic Behind the Attraction series. 10 out of 10 highly recommended! Speaking of Disney+ lineups, have you seen Cruella yet? We can’t wait for THE ROCK…ummm…THE JUNGLE CRUISE (with Dwayne The Rock Johnson, ahem.) Oh, yeah, by the way, Dwayne Johnson is executive producer for Behind the Attraction. Hmmmm…coincidence? (((((We think not.)))))

As for segment two of the episode, or, internet trolls, our advice is scroll on by, pure and simple. These days getting into a comment section argument can have dire consequences as one of Kym’s acquaintances recently found out. How about you….what’s your stance on freedom of speech? Cancel culture has become very dangerous, as discussed in this forbes.com article from 2019. Where do the lines become blurry about what can and cannot be said out loud or in a public forum? When does “my opinion” cross a line? How far does it go before dire consequences set in? How effective are no-tolerance policies in companies…is posting an emoji the same as posting a hateful slur-laden paragraph of vitriol? And this isn’t just about hot topics like Me Too, BLM, or Red vs. Blue. This type of negativity has trickled down to the mundane, every day life postings about gym workouts, pumpkin spice, and Christmas decorations. It seems these days nobody can Agree To Disagree or Live and Let Live. Usually when someone feels they must post a dissenting opinion we get more and more angry and spiteful remarks. Like, you’re actually losing your s**t over a coffee flavor/fitbit readout/Christmas tree in November and shaming those who do find happiness in those things. Why?

This age will likely be known as the Era of Judgment.

All we can say is 1) know your company’s policies about employee behavior and speech outside the company, 2) is it really worth the energy to get involved in these (inane) arguments) and 3) if what you want to say is not true, kind, helpful, or necessary, just maybe keep it to yourself because you never know how far that stranger you just pissed off will take their grievance with you. If you want to be an activist and change the world, there’s better ways to do it than argue with a lonely, miserable person on a computer. Just. Keep. Scrolling.

Links and Answers

Like today’s episode, we are NOT ENDING ON A NEGATIVE NOTE! For links to the article we cited and answers to the questions brought up during the conversation, read just a liiiittle bit more:

CORRECTIONS

  • Kris stated our outtakes music from our last episode Whadya Say? was Big Top by the Green Orbs. The song title is Big Top by Sir Cubfest. The outtake music from two episodes ago (How It Started) is At The Fair by The Green Orbs.
  • Kym’s statement about missing a reserved attendance day at Disneyland landing you in Disneyjail for 90 days was a tad off; the policy is 3 no-shows in a 90 day period will get you a 30-day suspension from booking additional reservations. So know before you go!

Saint Valentine’s Day

D’awwwwww LOVE!!! Isn’t it…lovely? And here we are smack in the middle of the loveliest week of the year. Saint Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Can you feel the energy? The warm, soft fuzzies? The excitement of a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, maybe a box of nummy bon bons, and the anticipation of an ahhhh-maZING dinner and maybe some “dessert” (know what we mean wink nudge???). Isn’t this beautiful day the perfect way to show your special love just how important they are to you and you cannot wait to snuggle up on them with all the giddiness that comes with those butterflies you still feel for him/her like you’re a danged teenager all over again?

OR maybe you’d rather tromp through a dank meadow of mildewed crabgrass with a handful of dead, black daisies and hurl them at the first person who offers you even a stick of gum let alone a Godiva nut-chew. Maybe you want to break that heart-shaped box into a million pieces like yours has been SO many times!!) Maybe you’re just waiting for 11:59 p.m. on February 14th to turn…the…hell…over! MAYBE – yeah JUST MAYBE!! – you think SAD old Single Awareness Day can go eff itself and Valentine’s Day – aka VD muahahahahahaha! – should be banned!

Yes!

YES!

YESDOIT!

Ok Kris. Settle down.

Regardless of how you feel about it all, today’s episode will offer up some fun facts about this day of feels. Did you know, for instance, its bloody and somewhat violent origins? (And extra points for a correct guess on which civilized empire started it all.) Who the very first Valentine was? Do you know in which plays Shakespeare mentions St. Valentine’s Day? Any idea why your favorite conversation heart candies are scarce in 2019?

And there are BIG numbers surrounding this one day of the year (it isn’t even a season for crying out loud!). We’re talking Billions (with a capital B) of dollars spent on sweets, flowers (mostly roses), dinners, jewelry, and lingerie. Millions of pounds of chocolate are produced, as are billions of those cute itty bitty heart chalk candies (let us remind you: except for this year – GAH!) which we adore almost as much as candy corn (and by we, we mean us)

Kym and Kris have some ideas about what you can do to save some bucks if you choose to celebrate, and encourage those who are not in a relationship right now to be completely and 100% a-okay with that.

(((((It’s just ONE measly single day a year! We can get through this!)))))

The episode wraps up with some pretty sweet stories about love. Because even though Kris sounds like a jaded cynic, she really does have a big lumpy heart full of hope. *sigh*

Gratitude

Kym and Kris and Gratitude
Kris and Kym discuss various gratitude practices and all the things they are grateful for, this week of Thanksgiving! Photo by Kimberly Sickel, @riverdeer at 500px

Happy Tuesday and welcome to Gratitude week! Today’s blog post is going to be short and sweet. In this week’s episode Kym and Kris catch up on Kris’ gallbladder surgery (it was moved up a few days and she’s recovering well) and discuss this week’s big holiday in America: Thanksgiving. We avoid the controversial history and focus instead on the  symbolism of Thanksgiving by discussing our personal beliefs about practicing gratitude, and list all the things we are verrrrry grateful for. From our homes to yours, we hope your Thanksgiving goes well and brings immense happiness and joy.

But if you are struggling with this time of year, reach out. There are people who love and care for you and you don’t need to be alone (unless you prefer to be!)

But most of all we want to say we are SO THANKFUL for all our listeners, all our friends and family who have supported us in this podcast adventure and who encourage us to keep talking on. And on and on and on… Thank you all.

Thank you to all our listeners

Marriage-Whys

Marriage-Whys Advice
Kris and Kym have questions about long-term marriage secrets, Kim may just have some answers! Photo by Kimberly Sickel @riverdeer at 500px

Kris and Kym welcome Kim (yes, not confusing at all, we know) to the show to talk about the whys and hows of long term relationships.

Alright, alright…we talk about…THE “M” WORD.

Not Mississippi. Not a magnolia. Not a monkey. Not a mountebankery. We don’t even know what a mountebankery is.

Nope. (We DO talk about mischief though.)

MARRIAGE.

Hey, look. Amongst us there are (more than two) divorces and a 31 year wedding anniversary. Guess who has the answers to those pesky “why?” and “how?” and “no, seriously, WTF?” and “REALLY, HOW HOW HOW?” questions? Wanna guess who is asking most of those questions? Kris says “hallooo!”

But honestly, there’s some really great insights (and quite a few guffaws) about the ups and downs of having a committed, intimate relationship with one person or an entire lifetime.

One of us is still confused, but learning every day.

And who’s putting bets on Kym having a story about some kind of shenanigans she was up to back in the day? Possibly even last week?

Golly. You’ll just have to give it a listen to find out!

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

By the way, the definition of mountebankery is: 1 : a person who sells quack medicines from a platform. 2 : a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan. Your challenge this week is to use the word mountebankery in a sentence, preferably with pointed finger and a confused onlooker.

Episode 01: Ctrl+Alt+WTF?

Welcome to Episode 01 of The Mugly Truth Podcast! This week we fuel up on coffee and technology. From the 70’s to present day, we reminisce about troubleshooting rogue cassettes, the right way to return a mixtape, disco, OG texting (aka passing notes), rabbit ear antennas, recording movies in the seventies, changing channels the old fashioned way, landlines and the real MTV. Jumping back to the future we cover all things social media (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat (STREAKS!), moms using cellphones, teenagers, Netflix, viral videos (Chewbacca Lady! I Don’t Watch The News Because I’m A Kid Kid!), tech spies conspiracy theories, self-driving cars (NOPE), Uber Air (NOPE NOPE), the kind of people who jump in elevators, podcasting, and even the Chunnel makes a guest appearance (one ginormous NOPE from Kym, two non-sarcastic thumbs up from Kris) . It’s literally gonna make you go HmmmmCtrl+Alt+WTF?

Special thanks to Paul Wilborn who helped us test our equipment, and even had us on HIS podcast (see Episode 21 The Mugly Truth on his podcast page at http://www.havingbeerswith.com/ ). If you like beer, hockey, baseball, or The American Wake, check out Paul’s podcast Having Beers With!

So grab your coffee and get comfy in your chair. Put on your headphones; kick the kids out of the room; turn down the volume on your work computer or turn it up in your car – because the swear jar goes into overdrive (we made over $2 in our swear-funding for equipment upgrades).

Let’s talk The Mugly Truth about TECHNOLOGY!
