So You Think You Know Thanksgiving

Today’s episode “So You Think You Know Thanksgiving” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Libsyn, Pocket Cast, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

We think this episode is in need of a rating. It’s definitely “I” for Immature. Or, perhaps even “II” for Immensely Immature. You might even call this one a NSFW but, eh, you decide. Whatever today’s episode is, it definitely is not highbrow. What can we say? Not only are we the height of a fifth grader, we’re also kind of on their level when it comes to our sense of humor. Whatever you think of our silliness be ready to put your thinking cap on because today we don’t just prattle off a bunch of trivia…we invite you to play along! Grab your friends, family members (kids optional, you’ve been warned), maybe a pen and paper, or just play along while you’re driving along. We assign a point system, but hey, you’re the king or queen of your domain, so you just set your point system as you like. If you want to award yourself a pumpkin pie for every correct answer, you do you boo.

…here’s the information on Mianus:

  • Mianus is in Connecticut.
  • Mianus is actually a small neighborhood that spans three towns. But Mianus is not huge even though like it sounds like it could be ginormous since, you know, three towns.
  • Mianus doesn’t even have a zip code. That’s how not huge Mianus is.
  • But Mianus does actually have an elementary school.
  • We won’t discuss the population of Mianus. You’ll just have to look up more facts about…you know… here.
  • We guess now would be a good time to say Mianus is pronounced, “My-ANN-us”.
  • All hail Jackass.

And before anyone else sends us pictures of Uranus, here you go, we beat you to it. Thanks NASA and public domain laws!

Uranus looks like a big, blue ball. If you get that reference, you win the entire episode.

30 Days of Thankfulness

Today’s episode “30 Days of Thankfulness” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Libsyn, Pocket Cast, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

How’s your November going? If it’s anything like ours you’re in a mild panic that Christmas is 40ishsumfin days away. In all fairness for us Southern California residents it’s still summer (today will have a high of 80…please visualize your favorite crying emoji here). Well, if mid-November has snuck up on you (or not), today’s episode will help you get caught up on what this month has become synonymous with: gratitude and thankfulness. We found one of those list memes which gives you a topic to be grateful for each day of the month. So of course we cover all 30 days in under 50 minutes.

We won’t spoil the surprise here, but honestly we have to say our favorite part of the entire episode is coining a new species: Snowmanimal. To even figure out how that is something Kym is grateful for, you’ll just have to give the episode a listen.

Even if you’re not a fan of anime-style illustration, just watching Sean’s sped-up process videos is mind-blowing. Plus, he is honestly one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet on this entire planet AND he served in the United States Navy (and continues as a reservist).   • Bernadette Banner Attention all costumers! Lovers of historical garments! Sewers! Even if you enjoy watching someone with incredible talent and skill…once you’re finished discovering Sean, go on over to Bernadette’s Instagram and YouTube channels and prepare to be amazed at her process of creating historical garments. She takes painstaking care to research and utilize all the legitimate elements, processes, and resources that go into creating garments as they would have been made in their day. This means she works with natural fibers as much as possible, and usually HAND-SEWS or uses her circa 1890’s HAND-CRANK Singer sewing machine. She is lovely, articulate, soft-spoken and quite witty. (Oh, ok, and do yourself a favor and just follow Cathy Hay here and here while you’re at it. You’re welcome. OH and American Duchess Shoes and Royal Vintage too. Ok. We’re done.)
  • Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies Don’t know if this is the exact recipe, but we’re willing to bet since they’re called “Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies” and they’re made with ground oats that this is as close as you’re gonna get to Kym’s favorite recipe.
  • CURRIED Salmon Cakes with Lemon Aioli Sauce Yeah, Kris forgot to mention why this is her favorite go-to recipe. It’s all about the curry. And the lemon of course. Because if you listened you’ll know how Kris feels about lemon.
  • Heemo Sushi Kym’s favorite “all you can eat” sushi restaurant is called Heemo, and they are in Orange at Tustin Ave. and Katella. You can follow their Facebook page here.
  • Knowlwood Restaurant Santa Ana Raise a mug to a bygone era of awesome kitschy dining. Kris mentioned Knowlwood’s in Santa Ana closed down and it’s a shame because that was a fun restaurant. The food may have been so-so – with the exception of those Irish Nachos – but the decor made it a nostalgic experience. It’s really a shame. There are, presumably, other stores in Irvine and Anaheim Hills, but the Santa Ana diner was a part of our growing up…we ate there as kids and then took our kids there, so we are sad to say goodbye. By the way…what the HELL is “Old Town Irvine” Do we call things dating way back to the 1970s “old town” now? How is this even possible. This world. This world kills Kris. THERE IS NO OLD TOWN IRVINE. STOP IT NOW.
  • Benji’s Deli Here’s Benji’s, since we’re on a nostalgic dining kick.

Black Friday Hangover

Happy Tuesday! In today’s episode of The Mugly Truth, Kris and Kym talk about the lengths people will go to to save a buck buying stuff the day after being so grateful for all the stuff they already have. Yep, it’s the episode about the day after Thanksgiving in America: a strange retail phenomenon called Black Friday where people sleep in tents and stand in line for hours in front of stores waiting for them to open at unnatural hours, and employees who run for their lives (literally) after unlocking the doors to let those insa…erm…hearty people inside.

First of all, let’s take a moment to shout out to REI who not only closes on Thanksgiving, but also does not open for the madness on Black Friday. WOOT REI!

Gifts at the ready
Shopping for Christmas can be fun and lovely, even on Black Friday if you’re a savvy shopper, or lucky. Or maybe totally insane. But go ahead, you go. We’ll be over here drinking coffee. 

So, some might enjoy the excitement of finding that perfect gift at deeply discounted prices – let’s face it, the deals are definitely amazing – and there ARE people all over the country who shop on Black Friday as a fun adventure and treat others respectfully while they shop.

But damn, there are also a small number of people who will drive over you in the parking lot to steal that newly acquired toy from your almost-dead hand.

Think we’re kidding? Go to blackfridaydeathcount.com (yep it’s a thing) to find out just how volatile the need to get more stuff for less money can get. Unfortunately, there are too many news reports riddled with videos of people brawling for a flat screen television…

…day…

…after…

…THANKSGIVING!

Mob stampeding, fist fights, grabbing, kicking, stealing and even shooting or stabbing, the day after we celebrate our national day of thankfulness. If it wasn’t so disgusting we’d be laughing our asses off at the irony of it all.

Kym was a BF shopper back in the day (when it was a bit more relaxed), because the woman has no problem waking up at 5 a.m. regardless of not needing to get up that early (seriously, what the heck Kym. What. The. Heckfire?!?), and enjoyed the thrill of the hunt! But as the years progressed, and the need for Rent-A-Fences and corraling shoppers grew, Kym decided it’s not as fun as it used to be.  Kris NEVER liked Black Friday shopping, avoids going outside at all costs the day after Thanksgiving and prefers shopping in cyberspace (if at all) on Black Friday. See, it involves pajamas, coffee, couch, pillows, and quiet…sweet, serene, empty, madness-free quiet. Brick and mortar stores are better saved for Grey Saturday or Ecru Sunday, or Taupe Tuesday as far as she’s concerned.

Kym talks (a little too informed, Kris thinks) about the current state of theft schemes nasty crooks are up to lately, which segues into a discussion about assho…not nice people who follow delivery trucks around and steal packages off people’s doorsteps. The best part is they’re usually too stupid to realize (or care) their mugs (not the coffee kind) are on video surveillance. Well, we guess if they were thinky folk they might actually have jobs. (Yes, you’re right. Thinky is not a word.)

Of course, we wrap up the episode talking about the best way to deter those jer…not nice people. Hint: it involves exploding boxes of…well, you’ll just have to listen to find out.

Cyber shopping
Cyber shopping keeps you out of the Black Friday crowds, but then you have to deal with doorstep thieves.

Happy Tuesday and welcome to Gratitude week! Today’s blog post is going to be short and sweet. In this week’s episode Kym and Kris catch up on Kris’ gallbladder surgery (it was moved up a few days and she’s recovering well) and discuss this week’s big holiday in America: Thanksgiving. We avoid the controversial history and focus instead on the  symbolism of Thanksgiving by discussing our personal beliefs about practicing gratitude, and list all the things we are verrrrry grateful for. From our homes to yours, we hope your Thanksgiving goes well and brings immense happiness and joy.

But if you are struggling with this time of year, reach out. There are people who love and care for you and you don’t need to be alone (unless you prefer to be!)

But most of all we want to say we are SO THANKFUL for all our listeners, all our friends and family who have supported us in this podcast adventure and who encourage us to keep talking on. And on and on and on… Thank you all.
