Bored in the House!

Are you bored in the house? Are you in the house bored? (thank you Tyga X Curtis Roach) Need a new hobby on the cheap? Want a fresh perspective on that old box of Chutes and Ladders? Today Kym drops some clues on inexpensive hobbies and Kris has trivia about board-games, jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Because singing a song about useless game knowledge on your guitar you just learned to play goes a long way with breaking the ice at your next Zoom par-tay! WHOOP WHOOP! BOARD IN THE HOUSE!

Kym kicks things off with some great ideas for keeping your mind and body busy (Kris has not broken the couch/tv habit yet, but there is always room for hope). There’s always meditation and yoga, yah yah….but what about baking amazing bread? Go ahead and learn. Your jeans will thank you for giving them time off to pay more attention to your sweatpants. (You might want to channel your inner Great British Baking Show contestant Val, who always got her cardio in whilst whisking, so getting back into your jeans won’t take so long).

When was the last time you read a book? You don’t have to have an actual paper book, there’s always Kindle and iBooks, and if you’re broke – like the over 22 million other people in America on unemployment – you can “borrow” a digital book from your local library.

If reading ain’t your thing, how about starting an herb or succulent garden? No room? No problem…even apartment dwellers can have a tiny box garden to help spice up all those amazing meals they’re learning to cook via YouTube and TikTok. Speaking of, so you think you can dance? Go toe to toe with the rest of the world in 60 seconds or less with the latest TikTok dance craze.

Other ideas include candlemaking, writing, poetry, learn to crochet or knit, and learning calligraphy. And there’s always learning how to pick a lock. We’re just saying, use your newfound power for good.

Kris then gets into her portion of the episode, talking about the greatest American pastime: Crossword puzzles!!! YEAH! Baseball what? That’s right. Live life on the edge, do your puzzle with a pen. Boom. Cruciverbalists can thank Liverpool native Arthur Wayne who immigrated to America, and worked for the New York World as the editor for the “Fun” section of the paper. In 1913, for the Christmas edition, he spiced up the page with a new puzzle: a diamond shaped grid with the word FUN across the top to start readers off. The readers loved it and the rest is, as you know, history.

Moving on to more insanely fun and interesting history trivia, yeah, it’s all about jigsaw puzzles! We’ll wait while you catch your breath. It’s ok. We know. It’s almost too much to bear. Anyway, these puzzles have a longer history than our dear crosswords, having been around since the 18th century. Apparently cartographer John Spilsbury thought it would be a grand idea to whip out his hatchet, chop a wooden map into bits, and then ask friends to put the pieces back together. That must have been an amazing party.

Kris rounds off this episode of majestic trivia with a (truly) fun list of facts about popular board games Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, Clue, and Scrabble. For instance…do you know the name of the crook in Monopoly jail or the cop who put him there? Does Mr. Monopoly (not his first name, btw) actually wear a monocle? Do you know the origins of Chutes and Ladders were actually to teach karmic lessons? Yep, your 5 year old is playing a game meant to teach the difference between virtues like Faith or Kindness apart from evil behavior like Theft and Drunkeness. It’s the ol’ desire and destiny playbook for today’s recess boys and girls. Go ahead and read them the origin story of Cinderella for good measure. While the littles are napping and you nip out to buy more boxed wine, just mutter “MUZJIKS” (thank you Scrabble) in a bad Russian accent at people. Don’t forget to sneer. That should keep everyone 6 feet away at all times.

Leap For Joy!

It’s leap year! Are you an hourly wage worker? You might just get paid for this lovely extra day we get this year (sorry salary people). If you’re born on this day, you’re one in 5 million (globally) or one in 200,000 in the United States! Those stats make you even more special than your mom says you are. True story. Depending on what country you live in makes a difference in when you can claim your birthdate in non-leap years. Sorry UK peeps, you’re not allowed to consider yourself a year older until March 1. New Zealand on the other hand…they are totally feelin’ the birthday vibes fronting you a day so you can celebrate on February 28. As we tried to wrap our heads around the math involved it becomes painfully clear neither of us know what the heck we’re talking about, but we have fun discussing it anyway. (Pssst…2100 will NOT have a leap year in it, been confirmed. Calendar people, call us.)

So apparently it was the Ancient Egyptians who first noticed the anomaly of solar years not quite matching up to their calendar, but it was Julius Cesar and his astronomers in 46 BC who actually tacked an extra day onto the already short and very cold (read: no crops growing) month of February. But their math wasn’t totally accurate – it overcorrected and ended up providing too many leap years. So about 1,500 years later, Pope Gregory VIII and HIS buddies tweaked it a bit more, saying yes, in order to have a leap year the year must be divisible by four, BUT! **Finger pointing mightily to the heavens** in order to make it all work out in the end, century years (such as 2000) must be divisible by 400! Soo…. drooling… and this is where we just hand it over to people who know mathy stuff. It’s really well summed up in this article at wtop.com called Math Behind Leap Year and Why 2020 Will Be The Year to Party, by Michelle Murillo. Seriously. Don’t take our word for it, Michelle knows:

The year that we say is 365 days is actually 365.24 days. There’s almost an extra quarter day in there. Give or take .01. So, every four years, all those quarters add up to almost one and we get an extra day. Not a big deal over a handful of years, but in a century, it’s almost a month. If you let it go a couple centuries, all the seasons will be out of whack. Imagine celebrating Fourth of July in the snow! It’s better we make the correction.“

Because Mary Jo also explains the reasons behind the whys and hows so much better that Kym and Kris could ever hope to. We are postulating that if your name starts with a K are not mathy, but if your name starts with an M, you are. Apparently M = Michelle, Mary Jo, and Math. And we apologize to all the K-name math wizards out there, we’re just a tiny little blog and podcast, don’t come at us.

Now. Let’s get down to clearing up that little misconception about the inimitable Dinah Shore. Ms. Shore, née Fannye Rose Shore, was a popular actress and singer with a career that spanned decades starting in the 1940s. Kym stated in the show she heard a rumor Ms. Shore sued her parents for not telling her there was African ancestry in their family. What we found out when we did a little research, is that in all likelihood that rumor is false. Her parents were Orthodox Jews who immigrated from Russia, and unfortunately her mother died when Fannye was only 16 years of age. We found a couple scant suggestions that the a rumor Ms. Shore had black ancestry was started by a vengeful peer, but there is no overt, factual documentation of either African ancestry, that Ms. Shore tried to sue anyone at all, or who may have started the rumor. So we’re going to say, yes the rumor is out there, but its veracity is highly unlikely. Not even gonna link to the sites we tracked down because honestly…not a big enough deal. If you really need to know, Google is your friend.

And lest we forget, we really encourage you to check out these fantastic bits and bobs we talked about today:

  • Locke and Key. Streaming on Netflix! So good. Based on a comic book, it’s replete with magic, mystery and a FANTASTIC Victorian mansion in a picturesque town. How can you not watch? For more details, check out their IMDB page.
  • Hunters. Streaming on Amazon Prime! Again. So good. It will make you uncomfortable (in fact, this BBC article talks about how Holocaust survivors are not happy at all with the show). Keep an open mind, suspend some beliefs that can catch you up (hello…it was 1977…they didn’t have DNA testing back then, but FINGERPRINTS WERE A THING…yet everyone touched all the weapons with their bare freaking hands). Anyway, it’s got a superhero vibe without being superheroes, and it’s presented with some kitschy tongue-in-cheek 4th wall sketches, and it is very much a social commentary about the world we live in today. But the surging truth that underlies the production is 1) we cannot forget the lessons of the Holocaust, 2) look around folks…wake up…we’re forgetting the lessons of the Holocaust, and 3) we CANNOT FORGET THE HOLOCAUST. Because REAL. HEINOUS. EVIL. REAL. We all good? Good. Because behind its hip façade, it’s a show that makes you THINK. A lot. Here’s more deets on IMDB.
  • Strange Indeed. We are ALWAYS ready to shoutout great podcasts and Strange Indeed is definitely awesome. They originally started as a week-by-week fan review of the Netflix show Stranger Things, but in between production of ST, Shawn and Rima Jo talk about other streaming shows. Currently discussing Locke and Key, Rima Jo is partnered up with Jason, as Shawn has taken a temporary break from recording. Shawn and Rima Jo previously covered Netflix’s “YOU“, Hulu’s “Castle Rock” and Amazon Prime’s “Carnival Row.” Please show them some love by checking their show out. Our True Crime Stories

If you have listened to us for a few episodes, you’ll have figured out we are obsessed with true crime. A year ago we were merely podcast fans, and our favorite podcast was (still is!) My Favorite Murder. Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark inspired us to begin podcasting in the first place. Because of the huge amount of true crime podcasts already out there – many of which are really great – we made a decision to go in a different direction. Yet true crime somehow finds its way into our show on the regular…usually in the form of discussing our latest “tc” podcast finds or binge-able television shows. Today we come full circle to where it all began for us by sharing two stories, in real MFM fashion, that aren’t merely “hometown murders.” Today’s stories are personal because we were both acquainted with the people involved.

Diego Armando Gonzales was brutally murdered in Orange Park Acres

Kym starts us off with the tragic story of Diego Armando Gonzales, (also referred as Gonzalez and Gonzales-Sanchez in various articles) a 17 year old champion wrestler from El Modena High School (our alma mater) in Orange, CA. Diego was a bagger at the local Stater Bros. grocery store at Chapman Ave. and Prospect Ave. where Kym shopped and interacted with Diego occasionally. Sadly he became involved with a cashier there who later lured him to his death at a construction site in the hillside community of Orange Park Acres above El Modena.

Kym also talks about another Stater Bros. cashier (same store y’all!), Janell Diane Enos, who shot her husband in 2016!

Kris’s story goes back 30 years but it’s as relevant as today’s headlines, replete with accusations of on-the-job discrimination and a workplace rampage that left one man, Allen Robert Motis, 53, dead. Two others, James Herbert Pichon, 36, and Hugh Kohler, 43, were also shot and gravely injured. Kris has a very personal connection with this story, as her mom was in the building when the shooting took place. The details are extraordinary; if you don’t believe in divine intervention, you might after hearing this episode.

Today we are calm, all is quiet, Kris tries Death Wish coffee and survives. All seems back to normal. We even bring back some spider stories. It’s a literal #TBT (Throwback, uh, Tuesday) episode as we share interesting stories we found from the internet. We have a few good ones, but in a flourish of dramatic mic-dropping, Kym lays a doozy of a story on Kris, like she does so often. We warn you, there’s a number of screams (because spiders, and…you know, Kym’s story) and maybe you shouldn’t eat before listening. We throw in some heart-warming tales to keep the episode afloat, but don’t forget…you’ve been given a head’s up. Or maybe we should say, toe’s up? Zombie Snakes

Caution, if you have Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), you’ve probably already thrown your computer out the window because of the photo below. But if you’re still peeking (perhaps a bit shaky if you’re anything like us?), rest assured that the purty little fellow is (fairly) harmless, but quite tricksy. Kris talks about the Eastern Hognose snakes who are making news lately for their defensive trick of playing dead when threatened, and then striking if something (or someone) gets too close. May we introduce to you the dramatic Eastern Hognose, otherwise knowns as ZOMBIE SNAKE (insert dramatic scary music):

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Be still Kris’ heart. The latest, and VERY expensive ($300 million to be exact) rollercoaster addition to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida (boohoo) is open and it seems everyone in the world of muggles and wizards is running, flying, apparating, or port-keying to be there. The lines are…wait for it…TEN HOURS long. Kris is a fan, but even if she lived in Orlando she’d be steering clear of THAT crowd (she’s 10 minutes from Disneyland and steering clear of The Galaxy’s Edge til the crowds simmer down). For a fun video about the ride, watch this NBC news report and for more details check this out. Ah, someday, Kris’ll be flying through the humid, thick Orlando air on a magical motorbike. Someday.

Good Humans

This is the viral image Kris spoke of in relation to the Good News Network story about Officer Brian Zagorski of Niles Police Department in Illinois. For more information about Officer Zagorski, please go here. He deserves a lot of recognition for taking time out to get to know a homeless man he saw having some trouble, and then literally giving him the shoes off his feet. As for the photo above, we don’t know the full story, or who took the photo. If you know the details and more importantly the photographer, please let us know as we would like to give proper credit.

  • Ella Casano is the extraordinary 12 year old girl who came up with the idea of cover IV bags for pediatric patients can be found here. Ella has to have regular transfusions so she decided to make the experience better for her and countless other kids who suffer the pain of the procedure.
  • Speaking of extraordinary kids, here’s the story of lovely 6 year old Eva Chapman who collected over 1,000 jars of peanut butter and jelly to help feed her classmates she knew might go hungry over the summer without the school meal program to feed them. We love Eva. We’re not crying though. NO WE ARE NOT. NOT NOT NOT. *sniff

And Now: THE STORY OF THE SOURTOE COCKTAIL (((ackkk)))

Erp. This is where things get gross. Kym saved the weirdest story for the end. Have you heard of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club based out of the Sourdough Saloon nestled in Dawson City’s Downtown Hotel in the Yukon region? It’s a club both Kris and Kym are sure they’ll never join, even though over 100,000 people HAVE joined it and still others are dying to donate to the cause. There is adventure and thievery involved, and even the United States Postal Service plays a role in this story. Mostly it’s just gross because Kris and Kym are absolutely positive the garnish of the ritual drink will never touch THEIR lips. It’s a story that’s sure to make your toes curl and your innards roil. Unless you think it’s cool, if so we’d like to say you’re kinda weird, and good luck on your trip to the Great White North. For more information on the latest update to this story, check this link. And even though Kris swore we wouldn’t sully this blog with photos of the initiation ingredients, well, see below. To our faint-of-heart, we’ll post a cute picture of a scaredy cat that you can look at if you decide you can’t view the, ah, “garnish.” All we can say is you don’t ever expect this crap with coffee. (Unless you like THIS coffee, which is literally from crap.)
