Magical Scrolling

Today’s episode, “Magical Scrolling” is on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Libsyn, Pocket Cast, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today’s episode is two basically polar opposite segments. First up is all things Disney: Magic Keys, our favorite latest Disney+ channel shows and movies, and Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience—yay or nay? Then we switch over to the less pleasant topic of internet trolls and the toll they can exact if you get caught up in a cyber-argument with one. This was actually supposed to be the topic for the entire episode. Honestly, this is how conversations over coffee go…and we’re not hating that we talked just as much about Disney than we did jerky trolls who wouldn’t say boo to their own shadow in real life away from their computer keyboard. We wrap up the episode with a list of days you can celebrate in September. Oh and we throw in a bit of a lament about summer, heat, and pray for the onset of Fall. Would it be an episode during summer if we didn’t?

So have you been back to Disneyland (any resort) since they reopened? Have you used the new “Magic Keys” system? Paid extra to get on a ride sooner? (Honestly it smacks a bit of nickel and diming, but it’s so soon in the process it’s hard to say. Plus we think we’re just jealous. Because we sure do miss our Disneyland!) As for the Galactic Starcruiser experience one of us is totally for it and the other…meh…not so much. At least until the Keys are obtained, there’s Disney+ content that brings the parks and rides into our homes through the fantastic Behind the Attraction series. 10 out of 10 highly recommended! Speaking of Disney+ lineups, have you seen Cruella yet? We can’t wait for THE ROCK…ummm…THE JUNGLE CRUISE (with Dwayne The Rock Johnson, ahem.) Oh, yeah, by the way, Dwayne Johnson is executive producer for Behind the Attraction. Hmmmm…coincidence? (((((We think not.)))))

As for segment two of the episode, or, internet trolls, our advice is scroll on by, pure and simple. These days getting into a comment section argument can have dire consequences as one of Kym’s acquaintances recently found out. How about you….what’s your stance on freedom of speech? Cancel culture has become very dangerous, as discussed in this forbes.com article from 2019. Where do the lines become blurry about what can and cannot be said out loud or in a public forum? When does “my opinion” cross a line? How far does it go before dire consequences set in? How effective are no-tolerance policies in companies…is posting an emoji the same as posting a hateful slur-laden paragraph of vitriol? And this isn’t just about hot topics like Me Too, BLM, or Red vs. Blue. This type of negativity has trickled down to the mundane, every day life postings about gym workouts, pumpkin spice, and Christmas decorations. It seems these days nobody can Agree To Disagree or Live and Let Live. Usually when someone feels they must post a dissenting opinion we get more and more angry and spiteful remarks. Like, you’re actually losing your s**t over a coffee flavor/fitbit readout/Christmas tree in November and shaming those who do find happiness in those things. Why?

This age will likely be known as the Era of Judgment.

All we can say is 1) know your company’s policies about employee behavior and speech outside the company, 2) is it really worth the energy to get involved in these (inane) arguments) and 3) if what you want to say is not true, kind, helpful, or necessary, just maybe keep it to yourself because you never know how far that stranger you just pissed off will take their grievance with you. If you want to be an activist and change the world, there’s better ways to do it than argue with a lonely, miserable person on a computer. Just. Keep. Scrolling.

Disney 101

Today’s episode “Disney 101” is on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Libsyn, Pocket Cast, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today we talk about one of our most favorite places in the world, DISNEYLAND! And, unlike Episode 33 Disneyline, we spend most of this show talking about our favorite memories growing up with Disneyland over the last, ahemmmmmmmph, 50 years, the attractions from opening day which are still in use today (aside from Covid-closure), Disney parks trivia, the new level of entry-checks for Downtown Disney, and celebrities who have worked at Disneyland.

We also talk about one of the most famous castmembers who isn’t a movie star: Maynard. If you haven’t met him yet, and you will be visiting Disneyland in the future, just ask if Maynard is working as you pass through the turnstiles. If the castmember doesn’t know, then you’ll have to check The Tiki Room or The Haunted Mansion and keep your fingers crossed and your camera ready! He is so beloved, his fans have created a Facebook page called Fans of Maynard, The Amazing Disneyland Castmember.

Kris was lucky enough to meet Maynard at The Tiki Room in 2011.

  • People Mover and SKYWAY. Of all the rides no longer around, the People Mover and Skyway are two thumbs up from both Kym and Kris for making a comeback. And, by the way, it’s NOT called Sky Tram. It’s ok Kris. You were so close.
  • Original Opening Day Attractions. Here’s the Orange County Register article written by Mark Eades from July 16, 2015, Disneyland Opening Day: These Were the Rides and Exhibits in 1955.

  • Sick Soaps! Do yourself a favor and visit this Etsy store, Sick Soaps. The Dole Whip pack aroma will take you right back to that line outside the Tiki Room…and is that Hat Box ghost not just the very best?!?! The Jack Skellington bar smells wonderfully like pumpkin spice. There’s other themes (OHMIGAWD THE VOLDEMORT SOAP!) to choose from, AND she makes face masks. You know where you’re shopping for Christmas now, don’t you!?
  • SWEET TRIVIA! We data-mined Popsugar.com and while we didn’t reference ALL their trivia, we sure used a lot of it. If you’re a fan of all things Disney, Popsugar.com is your holy grail of information. Knock yourself out.   • Eeyore Parking Only. For the “hidden Eeyore” in the Indiana Jones ride, check this out. Obviously Kris has not been looking in the right corner.

Sharks and Seahorses (AND OUR 100th EPISODE!)

Wow this is a big day for The Mugly Truth Podcast! Not only do we have a HUGE topic (like everyone else in the world) discussing SHARK WEEK, we are also so excited this is our 100th episode! It’s been a tiny bit of a struggle to get here, as we’ve had some down times over the past year. We want to thank all our listeners who are the reason we keep getting back behind the mic, talking about topics that interest us and ultimately entertain you (hopefully)! So yeah, today we’re talking about sharks, Shark Week on Discovery Channel, and for the win, we’re also bringing seahorses into the fold because SEAHORSES! Trust, you’ll learn some surprising things about those sweet little critters.

We hope you enjoy listening to the episode today as we had a lot of fun recording it. If you’re not a long-time listener, or just happened onto this blog and don’t know what’s going on, this blog is a companion piece to our podcast The Mugly Truth. Our episodes air every Tuesday, and each episode is paired up with a blog post where listeners can follow up on links we discuss in the episode. It’s also where we make corrections, provide additional information, and answer questions we had in the episode.

So let’s get down to business:

  • Cable Rivalry of Titanic Proportions! Kym brought up seeing some shark shows prior to the official 9 August start of Shark Week , and wondered if it might have been National Geographic airing those shows. Yep, it sure was. National Geographic got a jump on the shark footage frenzy with their version of shark week they call SharkFest – but just to make it a serious tussle, they started their FIVE week series July 19! If you don’t have cable, you can, of course, stream on an independent subscription, but you’re out of luck with Disney Plus because it’s not on their Nat Geo hub offerings. For more information on this ginormous rivalry, this article is an interesting read.
  • You Know, THAT Guy With THAT Voice. When Kym said Adam DeVine was a Shark Week host, Kris thought she was talking about Andy Devine and was quite perplexed because he died almost 20 years before Shark Week debuted. If you don’t recognize the name or face, you’d for sure recognize the famously raspy, sing-song voice. Andy was a much beloved character actor, famously side-kicking alongside heroic cowboys in many a western on the silver screen, radio, and television. One of his best late works was voicing Friar Tuck in the 1973 Disney animated movie Robin Hood. Andy was a local in our area (Orange County, CA) and his funeral in 1977 was attended by many notable actors, including Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne.

  • Is He or Isn’t He? Yes. 54 year old Mike Tyson (host of this year’s Shark Week) is coming out of retirement for an exhibition fight with Roy Jones Jr. in September. Apparently sparring with sharks wasn’t enough for tough Mr. Tyson.
  • Let’s Get Ready To Rumble! Michael Buffer is the famous boxing (not wrestling, ladies) announcer who made “let’s get ready to rumble” a household sibling war-cry. He is also offering play-by-play on the Mike Tyson vs. shark episode.
  • Clifftop Ruin. Marineland of the Pacific (we always just called it Marineland) was a huge attraction for over 30 years located in Palos Verdes, California. In fact, it opened a year before Disneyland! Then it shut down when new owners moved operations to their SeaWorld facility in San Diego which is still in business today. This article has some great photos of it being built as well as its recent state of decay.

  • Nighty-Night Sharky-Shark. Even though punching a shark in the snout is ineffective (Kym emphatically states you need to aim for the eye if you must fight off an attack), tonic immobility really is a thing. Just be sure to know which sharks it works on.
  • What do Harry Potter and Shark Week Have in Common? Both Harry Potter and Shark Week concepts were captured on that iconic spontaneous thought gotta-write-it-down medium: the paper napkin. Whilst SW was scribbled down on a pub napkin, JK Rowling wrote HP notes on a napkin on a train.
  • Dolphins – Too Many For YOU Mr. Shark! Yes sharks do prey on dolphins, usually the young, or adults who are sick, but dinner comes at a price. Lone-wolf sharks are usually outnumbered by the number of dolphins in a pod, who fight to defend their young and weak, so sharks have to work extra hard to get this particular prey.
  • Those Plumey Thingies. Yeah, those multiple plumes on a Lionfish are spiney fins. And each one is venomous. Seriously, don’t mess with these deceptively lovely sea creatures. Oh, and, yes, the toxins can be cooked out of the spines, so eating Lionfish is not deadly when prepared correctly. Here is an article with more information.

  • THIS MUST END. Sharkfin soup is a “delicacy” that is partly to blame for endangering the lives of sharks across the world. For more information about finning, please read this article from seasave.org.

  • Still With the Words. Kris KNOWS it’s JuleS Verne who wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But apparently her mouth didn’t know there’s an S in there. Also, here’s what a real nautilus looks like. For the Verne “Nautilus,” you’ll have to Google artistic renditions of it, or watch the 1954 movie.

  • Goes Right Through Ya! It seems as though seahorses don’t even mash their food up, as they swallow their food whole. And they don’t have stomachs. So it’s a bit of a dodgy thing, eating is. That explains why they eat so much so often! This article has a lot more information on the subject.
