Happy Campers!

Today’s episode “Happy Campers” is on  iTunes/Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastLibsynPocket CastStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

We don’t know about you, but after a very, ah, earth-shattering Fourth of July, we’re ready to get away to the peacefulness of a nice, secluded camp site, yeah? Today we share some of our very favorite camping stories to help ring in camping season; and you know a couple of Kym’s are doozies, since Captain Looseass and Grandma are involved. Kris has some internet lists of very interesting gadgets, the best places to camp in the world, and tips & hacks for when you do get a chance to get away from it all – whether you’re in a tent, van, or motorhome.

But first we detour (OF COURSE!) right out the chute talking about our Fourth of July celebrations (or none at all, unless you consider Kris’ staying inside and binge-watching Stranger Things Season 3 a celebration – which she does). We recount going through California shaking somethin’ fierce with two of the biggest quakes we’ve had in 20 years. We also cover other binge-able shows that aren’t Stranger Things, namely any Jo Koy comedy special, A Million Little Things and Better Things.

Ahem. Apparently we prefer shows with “Things” in them. And if you’re familiar with Jo Koy’s comedy, you know he’s included in that statement.

We do eventually get down to the business of discussing camping. We both love getting away from the craziness of living in a city, hitting the road to end up in a space and time where all that tension and traffic and work and congestion and noise is left behind. There’s nothing quite like unloading all the equipment and setting up camp – getting everything just right. And once that’s done, that feeling of sitting down in your favorite folding camp chair, poking the fire with a long stick, and watching the stars pop as the sun goes down and the darkness of the night sky opens above you…well we figure all that and the smell of coffee percolating or a pot full of rustic soup over a campfire is just this side of Heaven.

Get the food in that pot and let’s eat.

Anyone else get giddy just thinking about the latest piece of equipment you can add to your gear? Kris is already planning her birthday camping trip for 2020 and it can’t come soon enough! There’s folding camp tables, roof racks, and gear boxes to be bought. Maybe it’s a good thing there’s a whole year to prepare for the trip.

We quickly found out we have experienced camping in very different ways, though we both love camping just the same. Kym grew up camping with her Grandparents who were members of Thousand Trails where “full hookups, a pool, and lovely pancake breakfasts” were part of almost every trip. And if Thousand Trails wasn’t open, there was always the good old KOA campgrounds. Kris grew up hiking at a young age, but never camped until she joined the Girl Scouts. It wasn’t until later when she discovered her passion for tents, lanterns, campfires, and finding the “perfect” spot in California state parks (oh…the bags of quarters for those lovely SP showers!) – most memorably on the Central Coast (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Hearst San Simeon State Park), and up in the Redwoods.

  • For the list of gadgets we talk about – including the Kimbo Crotchless shorts (yes, you read that correctly) and the portable Espresso maker – please click here.
  • For the list of camping hacks that are borderline genius – including using Tic Tac containers for spices, and Doritos to start fires – click here and here.
  • For the list of the best places to camp around the world (and we know, it’s entirely subjective), or at least to see the gorgeous pictures we were oohing and aahing over, click here.
  • And even though we didn’t get to talking directly about the unwritten, universal camping rules, (we did talk about them in general) we’re going to post them here anyway, because it’s always good to remind ourselves how important it is to be good humans and better campers.

Below are Kris’ best buys from her 2016 camping trip. The Coleman lantern stand, the Mini-Factory multi-use hanger, and the Etekcity Portable LED lantern. 10/10 recommended!

Oh…here’s a bonus photo: Remember Kris’ story in a couple episodes (probably where we talked about true crime…good luck finding it!) where she talked about going camping with a guy she knew for only two weeks and let him take her to a campsite above Gorman, CA one November, absolutely isolated, nobody else around, and let him lead her to the edge of a cliff? No? Ok, well, anyway, here’s the photo of her feet and the drop and we would advise you to not ever do that. Ever. (He turned out perfectly fine and nice, but you never know).

Gratitude

Kym and Kris and Gratitude
Kris and Kym discuss various gratitude practices and all the things they are grateful for, this week of Thanksgiving! Photo by Kimberly Sickel, @riverdeer at 500px

Happy Tuesday and welcome to Gratitude week! Today’s blog post is going to be short and sweet. In this week’s episode Kym and Kris catch up on Kris’ gallbladder surgery (it was moved up a few days and she’s recovering well) and discuss this week’s big holiday in America: Thanksgiving. We avoid the controversial history and focus instead on the  symbolism of Thanksgiving by discussing our personal beliefs about practicing gratitude, and list all the things we are verrrrry grateful for. From our homes to yours, we hope your Thanksgiving goes well and brings immense happiness and joy.

But if you are struggling with this time of year, reach out. There are people who love and care for you and you don’t need to be alone (unless you prefer to be!)

But most of all we want to say we are SO THANKFUL for all our listeners, all our friends and family who have supported us in this podcast adventure and who encourage us to keep talking on. And on and on and on… Thank you all.

Thank you to all our listeners

Episode 06: Only Brats

Yep. Kris and Kym…are only brats. There are plenty of pros and cons with Only Child Syndrome. We had everything we needed, most of what we wanted. We never had to fight for the last cupcake, always got to ride shotgun (unless both parents were in the car) and we were the center of the Universe (we like to believe. And maybe still do…*sideeye*). And yet there were a lot of lonely days, and when things went south at home (because, you know, even in the very healthiest and happiest of households that happens) there was no one to turn to, to share the fear or the sadness with. There wasn’t a brother to feel safe with, there wasn’t a sister to whisper and giggle with. There was just…ourselves. And not all experiences for only children are like this, in fact, our experiences are quite different from each other although we both expressed that similar overall feeling of loneliness.  A lot depends on the parents and Kym is proof one parent can more than compensate for one not so great BioPU (Biological Parental Unit…pronounced bio-poo for good reason). When both parents are trying to get their lives together and rebuild and work and cope…sometimes the child gets a bit lost in the mix (Kris). And while we’re not going to outright say, “hey, that’s ok really, we ended up fine,” because it’s really NOT totally ok…there is an element of peace in that statement. Because we both did. And here we are, one raising two girls, one having raised a daughter…and all the offspring are doing a-ok. Because even though we’re only children, we really did learn how to share (I always say the ultimate and supreme sacrifice of love is letting the one you love have that last bite of cake) and we took the things we didn’t want to carry into our motherhood and made a real effort to do things differently for our children. Even better, we took the things we DID love and learn from our parents to be pretty decent parents ourselves. We think. We have expressly forbidden said offspring to indicate otherwise in any fashion verbal, body language, Snapchat, texting, YouTube rants, tweeting videos, IG IMs, etc., etc., etc., et al, legal verbiage infinity.

Just kidding. Titter teehee laugh laugh.

A bit selfish? Check.

Confident with being alone? Check check.

Center of the Universe? CHECK CHECK CHE….

Just kidding. AHHGAIN.

…maaayyyyyybe…

Well-adjusted and loving life? Definitely maybe could be possible Check.

Working on the above? For sure CHECK.

There’s lots of good in being an only child, and a lot of wishful thinking…

Episode 05: Traff**k

Whoa boy. Ok kids. We’ve been put in a time out because the salty language was flung far and wide today. So much so that we actually added a NSFW disclaimer at the beginning of the episode. Truth be told (the mugly truth that is), some people will listen and just say “PFFFT! That all you got?” Others could very well feel all aflutter and aghast at our classless audacity. Others may simply unfollow. (WHAT?? Sorry. Not allowed.) Which one will you be? You won’t know until you listen! Oh. Rest assured in and around the salt is some real discussion about just exactly what kind of idio…um…

Closing eyes. Breathing. Centering. Feel the cool breeze on your face as you emerge into your happy place…

people…we come across in our daily grind in Southern California traffic.  Who’s your “favorite” moro…

ooof.

Breathing. BREATHING. Centeringcenteringcentering

person to share the road with? The Tailgater? The Cutter? The Chaser? Blocker? Boxer? His Royal Highness Pete The Oblivious? The Kardashian Update Texter?

Man do we ever cover some doozy stories of our own.

And there are so many more we forgot! Such as The Creeper…you know…the @#$%! who gets as far ahead of everyone else as possible in the shoulder or offramp before merging? Or the *#*@&! who actually use the shoulder as a full lane to exit a mile away?! (Hey buddy!! The rest of us are over here minding our business in this damn 30-minute mile-long line, fuming, having to pee, worrying about what’s for dinner – did I mention URINATION??? – waiting to get out of this GODFORSAKEN ASPHALT PURGATORY LEGALLY! What makes you so special you gotta drive down the shoulder you…)

Calming down. Calming right the f**k down…

ohmohmohmohmohm…callllllmmmm callllmmm callllllmmmity calm…c’moooon

Breathing (hyperventilating?)

Namaste you f*@#!%

SEE? Traff**k.

But just to make matters light we offer an alternative to swearing and cursing. Actually, we offer a different type of cursing…that of the “May you forevermore blow a tire every time you drive down the shoulder for no good reason other than you’re a selfish, entitled little c$*#$twa@waff%@!” variety. You know, the kind that comes with a lightning bolt, thunder strike and cackle. And a few flash-bangs. We come up with a few good ones. It’s a good way to let off some steam and not lose your cool at the same time.

So join us! Click the Libsyn link below to merge into our Episode 05: Traff**k lane!

And hey, in all seriousness, nothing is worth your life and the lives of those around you. It’s a crazy, packed world out there, we’re all trying our best to get through each day, some of us fail miserably once in awhile and those are the times we need to have the most tolerance and patience. Let someone in, use your blinker, wait for the next light…slow down (yass Kris?) and for the love of God put your phone down. Please, get home to your family, your pets, or your favorite book alive, calm, and well. Take care of yourselves and each other. (KRIS…ARE YOU LISTENING??? Tsk.)

Episode 04: Julyoween!

Happy Tuesday!

Oh, dear mug-clutchers, we keep trying to manifest cool, crisp Autumn!! As we sip iced-coffee, fan ourselves and bemoan California summer heat, we try to bring a bit of October by regaling ourselves with Halloween-inspired tales…hence Julyoween! We talk about our own experiences with the paranormal – apparitions, floating ghosts, messages in our dreams, moving photographs (and not the super amazing, always wonderful Harry Potter kind), ouija boards, EVPs, orbs, ghost walks, ghost bus tours (the best in Edinburgh!), creepy childhood homes, long-passed grandmas, cemeteries, and even a dancing box.  And we also learn some of the most haunted spots in Orange County, California: Yost Theater in Santa Ana, The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, Yorba Linda Cemetery, The Wild Goose Yacht in Newport Beach, the Howe-Waffle House in Santa Ana (NOT the Whaley House, which is in San Diego – good one Kris *eyeroll*), Rutabagorz Restaurant in Old Town Orange, Kmart in Anaheim (wait…WHAT?? Yes you read that right…unfortunately Kris was thinking Walmart, ergo the what’re the ghosts wearing quip. Oh man. We hate when jokes get messed up on technicalities like accuracy and FACTS. *crossing arms, tapping foot, pouting*), Cypress College Photography Department, just about all of Fullerton, and so…much…more!!

Note from Kris: Hi all…I found a photo of my beautiful friend Kerrie Ann, circa 1987-1988, during Christmas time at my parent’s house (yes the one where most all my paranormal moments happened!). As I edited this episode on Sunday, 15 July, it hit me that that was her birthday. I miss her every day. Our birthdays were intertwined and mine was never the same after she passed. Rest in Peace my lovely, beautiful soul-sister, you will always be in my heart.
