Riffing and Bingeing

MMMM Good to the last drop
Kris and Kym find coffee is good to the very last drop! Photo by Kimbery Sickel, @riverdeer at 500px.

Today we finally get around to alllll the wonderful (or as Kris likes to say over and over and over: FABULOUS) shows we’ve been binge-watching on Netflix and Amazon Prime (haven’t find one on Hulu yet, but we’re open to it!). That is, we get to it once we slog through all the talk about a spider using Kym’s leg as a buffet, how to cope with hot-flashes, the best way to decide when to get married, Kris’ guttermind moment (PLUS she thinks Eugene Levy is hot), and Kym came up with a really good tracker app but is using her bullet journal until someone develops her idea to make her fantastically wealthy.

Mood Tracker
Kym shares her love of all things bullet journaling with her October Halloween-inspired mood tracker.

Um..yeah, so once we get through all that (and probably even more), the discussion gets down to recommendations for obsessive boob-tube watching.

We cover some new, some old, and all are…ahem…fabulous. Some of our picks include Schitt’s Creek, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell and others go way back to re-watching hits like Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy, American Horror Story, and basically anything true crime.

And then we drop a nice surprise for our listeners (and future listeners) so keep your ears open and be ready to have some fun soon!

Oh, and SHOUT OUT TO CON ARTIST for being the FIRST PERSON to email us. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You deserve a freakin’ prize!

A small, so inexpensive, yet very heartfelt prize.

By the way: if you’re wondering whether it’s bingeing or binging (tomato, tomahhhto), the online dictionary says the word can be spelled both ways, so we just picked the one that looks less wrong. Seriously. Neither looks right so what are you supposed to do.

Check out the Riffing and Bingeing episode to find out which shows we recommend or just simply love to bits! Go on over to  iTunes/Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastsStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts. Then all you need to do is 1) subscribe 2) download and 3) listen! AND!!! 4) If you enjoy what you hear, please leave a rating and a review (pretty please?). Haunted Orange

Old Timey Kym and Kris
Kym and Kris looking all old-timey in Old Town Orange.

HAPPY OCTOBER!

Kym and Kris dish on their experiences while walking through haunted Old Town Orange with their wonderful HauntedOrangeCounty.com tour guide Charles! Right off the bat Kris and Charles agreed the Howe-Waffle House in Santa Ana is INTERESTING. VERY VERY INTERESTING. It was an auspicious start to the evening. (Note to Kris: Buy thesaurus).

Kym_Kris_Charles
Kris and Kym with their HauntedOrangeCounty.com ghost walk tour guide Charles.

This episode covers some of the more gruesome details of the rich history of Orange, CA, brought to life through Charles’ entertaining storytelling. You’ll not only hear our stories, but we have some excerpts of the tour itself. Listen as our group winds its way through the lovely, Victorian era streets of Old Orange, navigate groups of college students and restaurant patrons, and occasionally strain to hear over the loud mufflers, buses…and occasional drunk guys. One especially. Jeesh. There’s always That Guy in the crowd. But it all ends up ok. The cops were called and Drunk Guy teetered off into the shadows.

We learn about the Royer Mansion, which at one point was a morgue and now houses offices with more than a little of unsettling paranormal activity. We move up the street to the Elks Lodge building with that one empty storefront that just can’t seem to keep businesses around. Must be all those pesky entities pushing people down the stairs.

Moving on to that one old furniture store which doubled as an undertaker back in the day – there’s lots of eerie activity in the building that the apartment residents on the top floors find out about right around the time they sign their lease agreements. (Tip: if you’re visiting your friends who live there and happen to see a woman all dolled up 1940’s-style…do NOT follow her into the elevator. Just sayin’).

Don’t even get us started on old motorcycle gang hooligans, fiery buildings, haunted nurseries, pictures floating off walls, a hotel nested inside another building, horse ghosts (yes, you read that. Horses get to be ghosts too), and more than a few restaurant specters. There doesn’t seem to be a place in the stunning historic area surrounding the circle – um, sorry hipsters and ancient ones, THE PLAZA (#eyeroll) – where you can’t miss walking in the footsteps of creepiness.

We round off the chit-chat with a rousing game of “One-Up Our Orange Connections” with a tie.

On a scale of 1-10 should you take one of the haunted town walks (Orange, Santa Ana,  Blackstar Canyon, and a new secret, soon-to-be-disclosed, location), we give it a solid 15. DO IT.

And in other news, Kym is doing GREAT and Kris’s sectional is in upheaval as she waits for a new couch. Oh, and those damned iGens went with GenZ instead. Seriously.

STORY UPDATE: There is no bull statue on top of the Sonlight building. Nope. It’s some sort of freaky bull-looking equipment. But one can be excused for wondering about a bull statue on top of a building when it’s 1) dark out and 2) in a major college town. We think #2 is our biggest case for thinking anything is possible!

Before you judge too harshly, take a look (click on the image to enlarge):

So, there you go. This is no bull.

BAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

Ahem.

Resting Bitchfest

Kris and Kym Old Orange
Kris must have said something off color but Kym clearly doesn’t mind at all.

Kym and Kris and Dog!

HEY HI!! How was your week? Was it as “interesting” as ours?? Have you been stressing out? Ready to throw in the towel?  Pretty much think people suck? You need to just let it all out??? Ok. THIS is the perfect episode for YOU! You NEED to listen because HONEY we are right there with you. Kris comes in pretty damned hot, Kym is in all kinds of pain (mostly because she’s cramping AND she tucked and rolled during a walk in the park), and we cannot BELIEVE we have even more traffic stories, including guys who drive around pregnant women in the crosswalk for a bagel, guys who park in no-parking spots, guys who honk the second the light turns green, women driving while reading….Wait. Who are we kidding. This is Southern California. We could have a podcast ranting ONLY about traffic every single day.

By the way, have you seen the meme where someone zip-ties shopping carts to a car’s door handle in the grocery store parking lot? INSPIRING.

Anyway.

We also talk(bitch) about gaining weight, crappy Fitbits, the pain of getting back to the gym, and then before you know it, we mention a dog story and BOOM! Just like in real life where we’re walking down the street deep in conversation, as soon as a dog comes into the picture we STOP! We FORGET EVERYTHING! We see, hear, and speak nothing but PUPPYPUPPYPUPPY and go absofreakinglutley gaga over dogs.

But wait! (Again) There’s MORE! This is our lucky number 13 episode! We don’t talk about that, but we thought we’d mention it here.

We share our Mom of the Year Stories about teaching our daughters how to burp nowhere near like little ladies, PLUS we have a Grandpa Joke AND a Grandpa Fart Story.

Captain Looseass to the rescue!

BURPING AND FARTING. Fellas, it’s alllll about making up for the cramps story. You’re welcome.

And just like that it all settles…it all calms…and all of a sudden…we are all about the Namaste.

Oh and by the way, Elon Musk, do we have an idea for YOU!!!

So lookie-here friends. We are here for you. If our misery helps you feel not so alone…if our pain brings a smile to your face…if our bitchfest makes you LOL…WHAT THE HELLNATION IS WRONG WITH YOU?

I mean…our job is done for another week!! And hey, we prove that in the end, it all works out and life is pretty great.

The Mugly Mindset

TMT_Ep12_IGPhoto
Kris and Kym talk about the latest Mindset List!

Greetings friends! Today marks a solemn and life-altering anniversary in the lives of hundreds of thousands of souls world wide. Of course, we’re talking about 9/11. We didn’t set out to do an episode about 9/11 today. The episode we are airing was recorded a couple weeks ago, with no thought of calendar, dates, or timely topics. We didn’t even know 9/11 fell on a Tuesday this year. So when it came time to schedule the episode we recorded for today, we realized it wasn’t quite appropriate when it finally dawned on us what day today is. So we swapped episodes. Ironically enough, we DO talk about 9/11 to some degree in this episode (which we absolutely swear on our Keurig’s life was unintentional!), so in the end, the Universe has a way of making things work out.

Today we talk about the Mindset List for the Class of 2022. This list comes out of Beloit College in Wisconsin. The list began as an email back in the 1990s and has now become a full-fledged “thing” with a website, books, and oh so much more. On their website, they describe the origin and function of the list this way: “The Mindset List has delighted millions for over a decade about what has “always” or “never” been true for entering college students. It was created at Beloit College in 1998 to reflect the world view of entering first year students, and started with the members of the class of 2002, born in 1980.”

For more history about The Mindset List (because we do not want to claim any credit for any of this writing whatsoever! It’s all theirs!!!), go to THIS link.

Ahem. Now for our words: Basically it began as a way for professors to share tips and tricks for wrapping their heads around the things their new students either take for granted or never will experience in their lifetimes. For us, and our listeners, and anyone interested in this amazing list, it’s a way to expand your perception, look at the generation gap issues, and connect with the youngsters (prolly gonna be known as the iGens…) in a way you might not have thought of before.

And, of course, one of the things that came up in our discussion is the fact that Kris’ kids will never know what it’s like to go to an airport without a TSA security line…or waiting at the gate with loved ones, kissing them as they board the walkway, and standing at the window waving as the plane taxis away. They’ll never know that because their world exists AFTER 9/11/2001.

So. First of all. Hug all your friends and family, tell them you love them and take a look around and truly appreciate everything you have (and don’t have). Take time to make a bit of positive change, try a little more kindness, tolerance, and grace. Try repeating a little more of that each day, after you’ve perfected your technique on this very sacred day of rememberence. Maybe if we all do that we can effect longterm, beautiful change in the lives of all those around us.

In the meantime, move over Millennials. Take a chill pill GenXers. Sit back and relax and let the Mugly Truth tell you all about the new wave of kiddos and how their world stacks up to ours. To hear about the Mindset List, check out the newest episode, The Mugly Mindset, on  iTunes and Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket Casts, Stitcher, (we are working on GooglePlay too for Android listeners!!) or any podcast player you prefer and then subscribe, download and listen! Marriage-Whys

Marriage-Whys Advice
Kris and Kym have questions about long-term marriage secrets, Kim may just have some answers! Photo by Kimberly Sickel @riverdeer at 500px

Kris and Kym welcome Kim (yes, not confusing at all, we know) to the show to talk about the whys and hows of long term relationships.

Alright, alright…we talk about…THE “M” WORD.

Not Mississippi. Not a magnolia. Not a monkey. Not a mountebankery. We don’t even know what a mountebankery is.

Nope. (We DO talk about mischief though.)

MARRIAGE.

Hey, look. Amongst us there are (more than two) divorces and a 31 year wedding anniversary. Guess who has the answers to those pesky “why?” and “how?” and “no, seriously, WTF?” and “REALLY, HOW HOW HOW?” questions? Wanna guess who is asking most of those questions? Kris says “hallooo!”

But honestly, there’s some really great insights (and quite a few guffaws) about the ups and downs of having a committed, intimate relationship with one person or an entire lifetime.

One of us is still confused, but learning every day.

And who’s putting bets on Kym having a story about some kind of shenanigans she was up to back in the day? Possibly even last week?

Golly. You’ll just have to give it a listen to find out!

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

By the way, the definition of mountebankery is: 1 : a person who sells quack medicines from a platform. 2 : a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan. Your challenge this week is to use the word mountebankery in a sentence, preferably with pointed finger and a confused onlooker.
