Good News

Our “Good News” episode is on  iTunes/Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastLibsynPocket CastStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

How overwhelmed with politics, bad news, and violence have you become? If you’re anything like us you need a really large dose of HAPPY, stat. Fortunately we are super glad to be able to oblige you with a bunch of feel-good stories including the miracle of a late-night call to a wrong number; a toddler gone missing in a hurricane found alive and well; a school helping their students get clean clothes. We go on to highlight four big stories found on a fantastic website called Good News Network (synopsis and links below). You need to be inspired? GNN has it all wrapped up in an “Good News/Inspiring” tab for you to get your feelz on. Want to shop sustainably or give back as you receive? There’s a Good Gifts section to lighten your wallet with little or no guilt! Want to get involved? Click that Get Involved tab to get started. We can’t extol the virtues of this much-needed website enough.

Ahem. Sidenote. Remember last week’s noisy leafblower mess we fought to record through? Yeah, Enrique the gardener and his trusty leafblower are back. BUT!! GOOD NEWS!! (ha… hahahaha…. BWAHAHAHHA how easy was THAT?) You won’t know just how much Kris lost her mind because we managed to edit most of it out. If you can get through the first 2 minutes of the episode, we promise you will not be sorry because Enrique finally settles down and the birds chirp in the background once again and the real meat and potatoes of the episode are related sans-annoying whirring machine. Ahhhhh….all is right with the Universe yet again.

Story #1: Coast-to-Coast Hiking Trail

The first story is an article on Good News Network called, Epic New Trail Will Allow Cyclists and Hikers to Travel 3,700 Miles Across America From Coast to Coast which is about a proposal to create a 3,700 mile hiking/biking trail that spans America from Washington, D.C., to Washington state. It will utilize about 50% of pre-existing trails and fill the gaps to make this the coolest – and longest – unbroken trail in the states. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has been working on the initiative for about a year now, and needs 1,000,000 pledges to help this trail become a reality. We’re all about anything that unites anything AND gets people off their couches, out of their houses and doing good things for themselves with friends. WOOHOO! And of course, Kris has a dark-side take on this story, but you’ll have to listen to find out what it is. Oh, and then there’s her attempt at a Scottish accent. #cringe #eyeroll. For more information on the Countryside and Rights of Way Act in Great Britain, check here.

Story #2: Gardeners Unite Globally for Pollinators

Have you walked down the sidewalk and seen a dead, or struggling, nearly-dead bee? Does it seems like that is happening a lot over the last few years? It is. Part of the problem is a phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder which has huge ramifications since pollinators such as bees are responsible for every 3rd bite of food you put in your mouth . The article on GNN called, “Over 1 Million Gardeners Have United to Create Global Network of Greenery That Nourishes Bees and Butterflies,” explains how the  National Pollinator Garden Network  has successfully encouraged pollinator gardens worldwide to create habitats that help sustain much needed bees and butterflies and wasps! Be sure to check out the links for more information on what Kris talked about if you wish to create one of these habitats where you live.

Another way to help bees is to provide sugar water to grounded bees. To avoid a scenario like Kris’ attempt as described in the episode, there’s this handy Bee Savior Card you can carry and use to aid the next little buzzer you see struggling to survive.

Story #3: Alice’s Kids

The next article we found on GNN is called, “Charity Has Been Secretly Fulfilling Small Wishes for Homeless Kids Who Could Use the Self-Esteem Boost,” highlighting a non-profit organization called Alice’s Kids which provides short-term financial assistance for immediate needs of children living at low- or poverty-level income. Relying on a network of social workers, counselors and teachers to guide them, Alice’s Kids makes anonymous donations, allowing parents to provide for their children’s needs with dignity. Please follow Alice’s Kids on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook. Please share this information and considering donating. In this day and age these “small actions” make the HUGEST impact.

Story #4: Girls Save Dad’s Barber Shop & Shave Stereotypes

Photo by Josh Sorenson on Pexels.com

This one packs a huge punch as well. The article, “They Disguised Themselves As Boys in Order to Pay the Bills, Now ‘Barbershop Girls’ of India Given Scholarships,” tells the story of Neha and Jyoti, from the Banwari Tola village in Uttar Pradesh, India. When their barber father fell ill, the likelihood of them sustaining the business (and paying medical bills and funding their education) as women was slim, so in a major act of gender stereotype middle-finger flinging, they disguised themselves as men and then proceeded to very successfully run the barbershop. Gilette (yes, THAT company) then stepped in, and with the help of cricket star Sachin Tendulkar, delivered scholarships to the girls for their education. Check out Sachin’s awesome take on it all on his Instagram page. To view the video Kris talks about, you can watch on the GNN link above. Unfortunately a link to the video on YouTube showed it as unavailable. #ShavingStereotypes.

Random Acts of Kindness

Happy Tuesday! Did you know February 17th, 2019 was National Random Acts of Kindness Day? In today’s episode we discuss how to celebrate (you don’t have to wait til next year folks) by making that little bit of extra effort to do a good deed for people you encounter in your daily routine. It can be one or one-hundred acts of unselfishness, and it can be for friends, family, coworkers, and strangers. The lovely part is that kindness is free and (almost) effortless.

Some people are naturally bright, cheerful folk, while others may need to make a conscious decision to turn up the corners of their mouth to show a smile. Obviously, if you’re a grouch, then it’s a bit more of a concerted push to get to the nice side. No matter where you are on the decency spectrum, we think everyone can agree this world needs more “random acts of kindness, and senseless acts of beauty” in it.

According to improvisedlife.com, that phrase was scribbled onto a placemat in a restaurant in Sausalito, CA, back in 1982 by journalist Anne Herbert. At that time Herbert was despairing over escalating violence in her community and elsewhere, and so turned the nightly news aphorism “random acts of violence and senseless acts of cruelty” into a revolutionary new philosophy. She started writing a column to highlight true stories of acts of kindness, encouraging people to shift their focus from cruelty to goodwill. A little over 10 years later, the nonprofit Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK) was started in Denver, Colorado.

Today you can visit the RAK website for all kinds of ideas to celebrate not just one but all 365 days. Visitors to the website can download posters, certificates, tag-you’re-it cards, and other forms of inspiration for their home, school, and workplace.

Being a good human can be expressed in the simplest of acts, from smiling at a stranger to paying for someone’s coffee in the drive-thru. It can be volunteering your time to help others in need. You can drop some change in a vending machine, leave an uplifting note for a stranger on a car window, donate blankets to an animal shelter, or hold the door open for someone (10 extra karma points if you’re in a hurry). Tell the cashier at your grocery store they’re doing a great job. Better yet, tell their boss too.

Here’s something else to think about: we are HUGGERS! WE LOVE HUGGING! It’s our go-to greeting because hugging is amazing and so very awesome and we encourage people to do it more. BUT!!! (Always with the buts!) Always ask first. Not everyone likes hugs; some people may have issues with being touched so intimately. Showing concern for someone else’s boundaries and respecting them is a TOTALLY “woke” thing to do and will certainly make your new friend feel comfortable and safe with you.

Now. Don’t feel guilty if you’re NOT that ray of freaking sunshine all the time. No one is asking you to be something you’re not. And don’t forget we KNOW about what traffic does to people. Hell, even perpetual smiley people have bad days. We’re all human. And that’s the point, really. We all just need to practice (again, some more than others) pausing, breathing and shifting perspective every once in awhile. We’re just encouraging everyone (ourselves included) to give it a shot here and there, off and on. You know, try it on, wear it awhile, see how it feels. You might find it…suits you.

But yeah, yeah, but what happens if you meet – UGH – just the BIGGEST jerk in the world? And you want to yell, or physically fight even, or maybe just walk away but curse the a-hole at the top of your lungs in the privacy of your car?! What happens if…you perform the unusual act of kindness by understanding you’re all of a sudden in a 2- maybe 5- or even 10-minute life snapshot of someone you have never met, know absolutely nothing about, and are probably at their verrrry lowest point in that infinitesimal space and time? Seeing beyond the regular stress and frustration of such an encounter could be one of the nicest things you can do. For you, them, and everyone in hearing distance.

Oooof. That is a tall order. Maybe just try smiling and holding doors and leaving dollar bills for people to find for awhile and work your way up to that level of zen? Let’s recap: Start small, try often, pause, breathe, shift. You’ll likely find that tranquility comes into play much more readily than you thought possible.

But wait, there’s more: this is just the tip of the niceberg. (bwahahahahaha!!! THAT’S a good one. Wiping one laugh-induced tear from cheek).

The physical ramifications of being a good human are also a terrific reason to (gritting teeth) let that guy merge in front of you on the way home after a super long day: helpfulness releases all sorts of chemicals and hormones in our bodies that help decrease stress and blood pressure and increases other good stuff like oxytocin. D’aw. Since we’re not doctors, read this if you don’t believe us.

To bring a smile to your face, here’s a gallery of some truly wonderful acts of kindness:

Photo by Rakicevic Nenad on Pexels.com Designed by Freepik

BRING IT ON 2019
Ciao 2018! Don’t let the door hit you on the tuchas! Hello 2019! Bring. It. On.

Happy Tuesday and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Goodbye 2018 you BEEEYOTCH. Today we talk about New Year resolutions. You either love them or hate them, you either keep them or break them. What are your resolutions for this year? Any money on the table on how fast you are going to wash your hands of them? Or do you have a wonderful, healthy strategy for helping you succeed in your life changes?

Today is all about the most common resolutions people make. We talk about the average time it takes for people to break their resolutions but also cover ideas about how to create realistic goals and the tools that are available to help keep you on track. So if you’re wanting to stop smoking, start working out, meditate, eat healthy, read more, learn a new skill, take up a hobby, fulfill a bucket list, lose weight, be more positive, travel more, get a new job, buy a house, save money….guess what: there’s an app for helping you with that.

We also talk about our own goals and strategies. Any bets on the first resolution we talk about NOT trying to do?

Hint: it’s fucking obvious, duh.

** side-eye **

But no matter what happens with our personal resolutions, we do resolve as your cohosts and cohorts to bring you 52 weeks of non-stop chatter, mispronounced words, creative facts, laughter, and lots of opinions. You’re welcome. SO…here’s to more coffee, more abstract conversations, and lots and lots of goofiness. Bring it on 2019. We are ready to meet you head on.

Good luck with your own goals, and we wish you all good health, beautiful love, joyfulness, prosperity, and friendship! We are excited to bring you a brand new year of fun and thank you for all your support!

Black Friday Hangover

Kris and Kym in Old Orange, CA

Happy Tuesday! In today’s episode of The Mugly Truth, Kris and Kym talk about the lengths people will go to to save a buck buying stuff the day after being so grateful for all the stuff they already have. Yep, it’s the episode about the day after Thanksgiving in America: a strange retail phenomenon called Black Friday where people sleep in tents and stand in line for hours in front of stores waiting for them to open at unnatural hours, and employees who run for their lives (literally) after unlocking the doors to let those insa…erm…hearty people inside.

First of all, let’s take a moment to shout out to REI who not only closes on Thanksgiving, but also does not open for the madness on Black Friday. WOOT REI!

Gifts at the ready
Shopping for Christmas can be fun and lovely, even on Black Friday if you’re a savvy shopper, or lucky. Or maybe totally insane. But go ahead, you go. We’ll be over here drinking coffee.

So, some might enjoy the excitement of finding that perfect gift at deeply discounted prices – let’s face it, the deals are definitely amazing – and there ARE people all over the country who shop on Black Friday as a fun adventure and treat others respectfully while they shop.

But damn, there are also a small number of people who will drive over you in the parking lot to steal that newly acquired toy from your almost-dead hand.

Think we’re kidding? Go to blackfridaydeathcount.com (yep it’s a thing) to find out just how volatile the need to get more stuff for less money can get. Unfortunately, there are too many news reports riddled with videos of people brawling for a flat screen television…

…the…

…day…

…after…

…THANKSGIVING!

Mob stampeding, fist fights, grabbing, kicking, stealing and even shooting or stabbing, the day after we celebrate our national day of thankfulness. If it wasn’t so disgusting we’d be laughing our asses off at the irony of it all.

Kym was a BF shopper back in the day (when it was a bit more relaxed), because the woman has no problem waking up at 5 a.m. regardless of not needing to get up that early (seriously, what the heck Kym. What. The. Heckfire?!?), and enjoyed the thrill of the hunt! But as the years progressed, and the need for Rent-A-Fences and corraling shoppers grew, Kym decided it’s not as fun as it used to be.  Kris NEVER liked Black Friday shopping, avoids going outside at all costs the day after Thanksgiving and prefers shopping in cyberspace (if at all) on Black Friday. See, it involves pajamas, coffee, couch, pillows, and quiet…sweet, serene, empty, madness-free quiet. Brick and mortar stores are better saved for Grey Saturday or Ecru Sunday, or Taupe Tuesday as far as she’s concerned.

Kym talks (a little too informed, Kris thinks) about the current state of theft schemes nasty crooks are up to lately, which segues into a discussion about assho…not nice people who follow delivery trucks around and steal packages off people’s doorsteps. The best part is they’re usually too stupid to realize (or care) their mugs (not the coffee kind) are on video surveillance. Well, we guess if they were thinky folk they might actually have jobs. (Yes, you’re right. Thinky is not a word.)

Of course, we wrap up the episode talking about the best way to deter those jer…not nice people. Hint: it involves exploding boxes of…well, you’ll just have to listen to find out.

Cyber shopping
Cyber shopping keeps you out of the Black Friday crowds, but then you have to deal with doorstep thieves.
