Our True Crime Stories

Today’s episode “Our True Crime Stories” is on  iTunes/Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastLibsynPocket CastStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

If you have listened to us for a few episodes, you’ll have figured out we are obsessed with true crime. A year ago we were merely podcast fans, and our favorite podcast was (still is!) My Favorite Murder. Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark inspired us to begin podcasting in the first place. Because of the huge amount of true crime podcasts already out there – many of which are really great – we made a decision to go in a different direction. Yet true crime somehow finds its way into our show on the regular…usually in the form of discussing our latest “tc” podcast finds or binge-able television shows. Today we come full circle to where it all began for us by sharing two stories, in real MFM fashion, that aren’t merely “hometown murders.” Today’s stories are personal because we were both acquainted with the people involved.

The 2003 Murder of El Modena High School Champion Wrestler Diego Armando Gonzales

Diego Armando Gonzales was brutally murdered in Orange Park Acres

Kym starts us off with the tragic story of Diego Armando Gonzales, (also referred as Gonzalez and Gonzales-Sanchez in various articles) a 17 year old champion wrestler from El Modena High School (our alma mater) in Orange, CA. Diego was a bagger at the local Stater Bros. grocery store at Chapman Ave. and Prospect Ave. where Kym shopped and interacted with Diego occasionally. Sadly he became involved with a cashier there who later lured him to his death at a construction site in the hillside community of Orange Park Acres above El Modena.

Kym also talks about another Stater Bros. cashier (same store y’all!), Janell Diane Enos, who shot her husband in 2016!

1991 Workplace Shooting at Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa

Fairview Developmental Center, Photo By Leonard Ortiz OC Register/SCNG. The photo above shows the second story of the Administrative building. You can see the executive administrator’s office windows on the wall facing the photographer. Kris’ mom’s office window is above the entrance.

Kris’s story goes back 30 years but it’s as relevant as today’s headlines, replete with accusations of on-the-job discrimination and a workplace rampage that left one man, Allen Robert Motis, 53, dead. Two others, James Herbert Pichon, 36, and Hugh Kohler, 43, were also shot and gravely injured. Kris has a very personal connection with this story, as her mom was in the building when the shooting took place. The details are extraordinary; if you don’t believe in divine intervention, you might after hearing this episode.

Mugly MayAhem

Today’s “Mugly MayAhem!” episode is on  iTunes/Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastLibsynPocket CastStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Have you ever had a day where, on the whole it is quite wonderful, but just under the surface everything seems just a tad…off? The juxtaposition of great weather, being outdoors in the fresh air with family and friends, eating great food and having no pressures or stress weighing you down but mixed with just a hint of, “mhmmm that’s weird”? Yeah, that was Saturday.

May has been such a busy month (only a couple weeks in, but it seems like a full one already), we decided to do a catch-up episode. Kris went to Canada on business, The Mugly Truth has a new mascot (Kym’s new Mini Australian Shepherd named MOOCH!), Kris’ oldest is driving, her youngest made cheer squad going into high school, we’ve been bingeing amazing new podcasts, documentaries, audiobooks, and t.v. shows….SO MUCH to talk about!!

Our lovely view while we record. Seriously wonderful. Photo courtesy Kristen Core. All rights reserved.

So we settled down under a lovely oak tree, chattered gleefully about all the things – completely topic-less – wrapped the episode, and started packing up the equipment only to discover the recording was useless. USE. LESS. #SIGH. Our producer/audio technician (ummmmm, KRIS) failed to notice the mics weren’t running to the recording software, blah, blah, blah (really, no need to go into details). Let’s just say it was an inauspicious start to what would become a kind of bizarre day.

Ah well, shite happens, eh? We shrugged it off as exactly that, made plans to regroup in three hours and went separate ways for nourishment. Oh the things that can happen in three hours. You can hear Kris recount channeling her best foul-mouthed New Yorker spirit outside the local Hobby Lobby upon discovering two very large (seriously, at least 6′ 5″) dudes being vurrrrrry interested in the contents of her car. For whatever reason, her 5′ 1″ self with 10′ tall East Side attitude (aided by 16 oz of Vietnamese coffee) managed to shoo them away without incident. On second thought, that probably doesn’t sound so weird depending on where you might live, but at the time it was not something one expects to have to cope with whilst leaving the secondary house of the Lord with a bag full of craft paints and resin decorative items scored at 50% off.

Perhaps the oddest event of the entire day was the first stop for Kris and the kids getting lunch…parking in an everyday parking lot of a typical busy strip mall in a (fairly) quiet, (fairly) mundane little suburb town in Southern California…basically a spot one doesn’t usually come across evil symbols of hate, yet there it was. A swastika, written in what looked to be red lipstick on the hood of a pretty, white new(ish) car. Just sitting there. A Nazi f**king swastika. Initial reaction? Photo posted to Facebook with a rant about #noH8.

Do you know the difference between a hate-filled swastika and a swastik that means this car runs well? Kris didn’t. At first. Photo courtesy Kristen Core. All rights reserved.

That’s when a friend posted in the kindest way stating while it might LOOK like the wretched Nazi emblem, the way it was written didn’t match how the Nazis used the swastika (tilted to the right). He further pointed out there was a figurine on the dashboard that appeared to be Hindu (or perhaps Buddhist) and that the symbol was ancient, used in other societies, religions and cultures as a sign of good luck or divinity. In Sanskrit, the word swastika is a combination of ‘su’ (meaning ‘good’) and ‘asti’ (meaning ‘to exist’). After researching a bit, we’ve found a couple really good articles, one actually being this Quora forum which provides all the information you could want to know about why someone might draw a swastika on their car. And maybe why they shouldn’t do it in such a blatant spot. It’s worth reading all the answers. Then there’s this BBC article about the symbol, some group’s efforts to revitalize the true meaning of the swastika, and why it is highly unlikely anyone is going to be able to get past how any iteration is seen as representing the highly effed-up and hateful ideology of Hitler (and later Charles Manson who carved it on to his own forehead).

By the end of the day (literally) everything turned out to be an amazing kickoff to a wonderful Mother’s Day (oh yeah, that happened too!)…we got the recording done right the second time around. New things had been learned and shared. We then sat and talked more with Kym’s folks, Kris’ girls painted more rocks. The barbecue was started and really good food was consumed as the sun set, the breeze calmed, and the owls and mockingbirds serenaded little Mooch to sleep (again).

Greetings! Happy Friday! Here’s a short shot episode where Kris and Kym play catch-up! We talk about the week that was, and boy was it PACKED! There’s also discussion about how the city of Santa Ana has changed and how Kris missed a golden opportunity to be part of an Irish punk folk band. Let’s just say accordions….sort of rock.

Today is all about catching up with each other and with YOU.

Episode 05: Traff**k

Whoa boy. Ok kids. We’ve been put in a time out because the salty language was flung far and wide today. So much so that we actually added a NSFW disclaimer at the beginning of the episode. Truth be told (the mugly truth that is), some people will listen and just say “PFFFT! That all you got?” Others could very well feel all aflutter and aghast at our classless audacity. Others may simply unfollow. (WHAT?? Sorry. Not allowed.) Which one will you be? You won’t know until you listen! Oh. Rest assured in and around the salt is some real discussion about just exactly what kind of idio…um…

Closing eyes. Breathing. Centering. Feel the cool breeze on your face as you emerge into your happy place…

people…we come across in our daily grind in Southern California traffic.  Who’s your “favorite” moro…

ooof.

Breathing. BREATHING. Centeringcenteringcentering

person to share the road with? The Tailgater? The Cutter? The Chaser? Blocker? Boxer? His Royal Highness Pete The Oblivious? The Kardashian Update Texter?

Man do we ever cover some doozy stories of our own.

And there are so many more we forgot! Such as The Creeper…you know…the @#$%! who gets as far ahead of everyone else as possible in the shoulder or offramp before merging? Or the *#*@&! who actually use the shoulder as a full lane to exit a mile away?! (Hey buddy!! The rest of us are over here minding our business in this damn 30-minute mile-long line, fuming, having to pee, worrying about what’s for dinner – did I mention URINATION??? – waiting to get out of this GODFORSAKEN ASPHALT PURGATORY LEGALLY! What makes you so special you gotta drive down the shoulder you…)

Calming down. Calming right the f**k down…

Breathing (hyperventilating?)

Namaste you f*@#!%

SEE? Traff**k.

But just to make matters light we offer an alternative to swearing and cursing. Actually, we offer a different type of cursing…that of the “May you forevermore blow a tire every time you drive down the shoulder for no good reason other than you’re a selfish, entitled little c$*#$twa@waff%@!” variety. You know, the kind that comes with a lightning bolt, thunder strike and cackle. And a few flash-bangs. We come up with a few good ones. It’s a good way to let off some steam and not lose your cool at the same time.

And hey, in all seriousness, nothing is worth your life and the lives of those around you. It’s a crazy, packed world out there, we’re all trying our best to get through each day, some of us fail miserably once in awhile and those are the times we need to have the most tolerance and patience. Let someone in, use your blinker, wait for the next light…slow down (yass Kris?) and for the love of God put your phone down. Please, get home to your family, your pets, or your favorite book alive, calm, and well. Take care of yourselves and each other. (KRIS…ARE YOU LISTENING??? Tsk.)

Episode 04: Julyoween!

Happy Tuesday!

Oh, dear mug-clutchers, we keep trying to manifest cool, crisp Autumn!! As we sip iced-coffee, fan ourselves and bemoan California summer heat, we try to bring a bit of October by regaling ourselves with Halloween-inspired tales…hence Julyoween! We talk about our own experiences with the paranormal – apparitions, floating ghosts, messages in our dreams, moving photographs (and not the super amazing, always wonderful Harry Potter kind), ouija boards, EVPs, orbs, ghost walks, ghost bus tours (the best in Edinburgh!), creepy childhood homes, long-passed grandmas, cemeteries, and even a dancing box.  And we also learn some of the most haunted spots in Orange County, California: Yost Theater in Santa Ana, The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, Yorba Linda Cemetery, The Wild Goose Yacht in Newport Beach, the Howe-Waffle House in Santa Ana (NOT the Whaley House, which is in San Diego – good one Kris *eyeroll*), Rutabagorz Restaurant in Old Town Orange, Kmart in Anaheim (wait…WHAT?? Yes you read that right…unfortunately Kris was thinking Walmart, ergo the what’re the ghosts wearing quip. Oh man. We hate when jokes get messed up on technicalities like accuracy and FACTS. *crossing arms, tapping foot, pouting*), Cypress College Photography Department, just about all of Fullerton, and so…much…more!!

Don’t be scared, click the Libsyn link below to help you cross over to the latest Episode of the Mugly Truth Podcast!

Note from Kris: Hi all…I found a photo of my beautiful friend Kerrie Ann, circa 1987-1988, during Christmas time at my parent’s house (yes the one where most all my paranormal moments happened!). As I edited this episode on Sunday, 15 July, it hit me that that was her birthday. I miss her every day. Our birthdays were intertwined and mine was never the same after she passed. Rest in Peace my lovely, beautiful soul-sister, you will always be in my heart.
