Christmas Food Around The World

Today’s episode “Christmas Food Around The World” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Happy Tuesday! We all survived Friday the 13th and we are diving headlong into the home stretch to Christmas! If you celebrate this amazing holiday, whether by Faith or by simple joy of the season, we’re here today to make it a little sweeter. Maybe a little fatter. A little more savory. Definitely crunchier. Yes, we’re talking Christmas FOOD! Two of our very most favorite topics in the entire world.

This is a short blog post because last night Kris was celebrating her daughter’s 15th birthday, so grab your coffee, settle in and listen to the delectable delights of holiday feasting! But before you go, here’s some answers to our pressing questions and also links to the articles we read from:

  • The first day of winter is…drumroll please…Saturday 21 December 2019 and it ENDS on Thursday 19 March 2020!
  • Kris’ list came from aleteia.org. The Best Christmas Food Traditions From Around The World article by Cerith Gardiner can be found here.
  • For the lovely Polish tradition of Wigilia (Christmas Eve supper) please go here not only for more information but maybe how to pronounce it correctly.
  • For “Apostle Fingers” recipe…it’s a thing…go here.
  • That other word…Weihnachtsplätzchen…can be better explained here.
  • Kym’s list from Shannon Kennedy’s article Christmas Food Traditions Around the World from fluentin3months.com can be found here.
  • We think this is Kym’s “Sven Horn” but don’t quote us on that.
  • GO WATCH THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW MASTERCLASS RIGHT NOW PEOPLE. Or if you don’t want to do what we yell at you about, at least check out this recipe for Paul Hollywood’s St. Lucia Buns. Ooh La La.
  • Because FRUITCAKE, if you’re interested, here’s a story about a family who looks after a 137 (now about 140) year old cake of the fruit.

So You Think You Know Thanksgiving

Today’s episode “So You Think You Know Thanksgiving” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

We think this episode is in need of a rating. It’s definitely “I” for Immature. Or, perhaps even “II” for Immensely Immature. You might even call this one a NSFW but, eh, you decide. Whatever today’s episode is, it definitely is not highbrow. What can we say? Not only are we the height of a fifth grader, we’re also kind of on their level when it comes to our sense of humor. Whatever you think of our silliness be ready to put your thinking cap on because today we don’t just prattle off a bunch of trivia…we invite you to play along! Grab your friends, family members (kids optional, you’ve been warned), maybe a pen and paper, or just play along while you’re driving along. We assign a point system, but hey, you’re the king or queen of your domain, so you just set your point system as you like. If you want to award yourself a pumpkin pie for every correct answer, you do you boo.

And while we don’t encourage cheating (tsk tsk), once you’ve listened to the episode, for sure come back here to click the links of the sites we pulled our questions from since we didn’t cover all the trivia:

Oh. And…

…Um….

*throat clearing*

ahem…

…here’s the information on Mianus:

  • Mianus is in Connecticut.
  • Mianus is actually a small neighborhood that spans three towns. But Mianus is not huge even though like it sounds like it could be ginormous since, you know, three towns.
  • Mianus doesn’t even have a zip code. That’s how not huge Mianus is.
  • But Mianus does actually have an elementary school.
  • We won’t discuss the population of Mianus. You’ll just have to look up more facts about…you know… here.
  • We guess now would be a good time to say Mianus is pronounced, “My-ANN-us”.
  • All hail Jackass.

And before anyone else sends us pictures of Uranus, here you go, we beat you to it. Thanks NASA and public domain laws!

Uranus looks like a big, blue ball. If you get that reference, you win the entire episode.

See? We are definitely NOT highbrow, scholarly, fancy schmancy podcasters. Sometimes we get as low-level potty poopoo mouth as can be. AND WE LIKE IT THAT WAY. NYAH.

Thank you for joining us as we hurtle towards our second childhood. Second Harvest Food Bank and Patriotic Service Dog Foundation

Today’s episode “Second Harvest Food Bank and Patriotic Service Dog Foundation” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today’s episode of The Mugly Truth Podcast is an extra special one. We talk about our favorite foundations and encourage all our readers and listeners to check them out. Kym highlights the Second Harvest Food Bank and Kris talks about Patriotic Service Dog Foundation.

The Second Harvest Food Bank

The Second Harvest Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, which was started as St. Mary’s Food Bank by John van Hengel in Phoenix, AZ in the 1960’s. By the 1970s, 18 cities across the country soon had food banks. In 1979 Hengel created a national food bank which he called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network. In 2008 the name changed to Feeding America. The Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County is the chapter local to us personally, located in Irvine, CA. Their website, feedoc.org, is a wealth of information about the hunger statistics not only locally, but nationwide, as well as how to donate both money and time. For more information about a food bank in your hometown, please visit feedingamerica.org

The Facebook page for Patriotic Service Dog Foundation

Patriotic Service Dog Foundation is a group out of Murrieta, CA, dedicated to the training of service dogs for men and women suffering from PTSD after serving in the military, emergency response, and public safety. Recently they participated in a documentary, called To Be of Service (on Netflix), about how service dogs have helped improve the lives of these men and women. Currently Veteran’s Affairs does not pay for service dogs to be provided to veteran’s. Therefore all training costs are funded by private donations. We highly recommend viewing the documentary, and then visiting Patriotic Service Dog Foundation’s website and Facebook page.

Screenshot of the video with Chris, Jenn, and Emmy Thomas on Patriotic Service Dog Foundation’s Facebook page.

We also encourage you to watch the short video about Kris’ co-worker, Chris Thomas, and his wife Jenn, and how their lives have been changed by Emmy, Chris’ service dog from Patriotic Service Dog Foundation. In the podcast episode, Kris couldn’t remember the details of Chris’ service, or the battalion he served with, how it tied in with the Naval Base Guam’s war dog memorial, and Emmy’s name origin. Jenn was kind enough to text the details:

It was 23 years active duty with 18 months of active combat time, that time was split between Iraq and Afghanistan deployments, multiple times for each country. Chris served with the Magnificent Bastards which is an infantry battalion. That is also the same battalion that 25 war dogs gave their lives serving and protecting marines in WWII. The memorial is in Guam and that is where the dog’s names are listed, Emmy being one of them.

– Jenn Thomas
The memorial – called “Always Faithful” – to the 25 Marine War Dogs killed during WWII. Naval Base Guam .

When we say the Universe likes to show off sometimes, this is a pretty good example of exactly what we mean.
