There is a lot of stuff captured in today’s episode, but the real takeaway is Kym and Kris feel FINE AT FIFTY! Photo by Kimberly Sickel, @riverdeer 500px
Happy Tuesday! Hope everyone’s election day went…well. But enough about politics. Today Kym and Kris get into a series of discussions ranging everywhere from the latest California wildfires to teenagers strangling their mom’s (FLORIDA KNOCK YOUR SH*T OFF) to Kym’s shopping for sub-zero temperatures clothing, how Xboxes and Wiis can be completely heartless, cruel and insensitive, and then Kris recounts her harrowing trip to the ER in the middle of the night. (Ok. NOT harrowing, but eventful). Oh, and Kym is CLEAR OF CANCER! All her tests came back and she is a clean, clear, cancer-free slate. We could not be happier! There’s so much to be grateful for!
Rocky the Podcat hasn’t left Kris’ side since she got home from the hospital. She loves her hooman. Kris swears this is true.
And then there’s the discussion about our total obsession with bullet journaling (aka, bujo) and exactly how it is NOT just for women. In fact, it was started by a guy named Ryder Carroll, who explains it all in this video. So, if you need a little organization, focus, tracking, spaces for ideas, doodles, lists, or anything else you can think of to keep your life running a little more smoothly – and have it all in one place – we highly recommend trying this personalized planner system that you can keep as simple or as embellished as you want!
Here’s Kym’s bullet journal week at a glance done in a very creative, yummy way!A really washed out Habit Tracker for Kris to track how many days in the month of November she cusses out people in traff**k. Considering today is the 13th, we’re thinking Kris has a lot to think about. Just sit there and think about what you’ve done Kris.

Kris and Kym find coffee is good to the very last drop! Photo by Kimbery Sickel, @riverdeer at 500px.
Today we finally get around to alllll the wonderful (or as Kris likes to say over and over and over: FABULOUS) shows we’ve been binge-watching on Netflix and Amazon Prime (haven’t find one on Hulu yet, but we’re open to it!). That is, we get to it once we slog through all the talk about a spider using Kym’s leg as a buffet, how to cope with hot-flashes, the best way to decide when to get married, Kris’ guttermind moment (PLUS she thinks Eugene Levy is hot), and Kym came up with a really good tracker app but is using her bullet journal until someone develops her idea to make her fantastically wealthy.
Kym shares her love of all things bullet journaling with her October Halloween-inspired mood tracker.
Um..yeah, so once we get through all that (and probably even more), the discussion gets down to recommendations for obsessive boob-tube watching.
We cover some new, some old, and all are…ahem…fabulous. Some of our picks include Schitt’s Creek, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell and others go way back to re-watching hits like Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy, American Horror Story, and basically anything true crime.
And then we drop a nice surprise for our listeners (and future listeners) so keep your ears open and be ready to have some fun soon!
Oh, and SHOUT OUT TO CON ARTIST for being the FIRST PERSON to email us. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You deserve a freakin’ prize!
A small, so inexpensive, yet very heartfelt prize.
By the way: if you’re wondering whether it’s bingeing or binging (tomato, tomahhhto), the online dictionary says the word can be spelled both ways, so we just picked the one that looks less wrong. Seriously. Neither looks right so what are you supposed to do.
Check out the Riffing and Bingeing episode to find out which shows we recommend or just simply love to bits! Happy All Hallow’s Eve Eve!!! Today marks our last episode of October 2018, extolling eerie, spooky, Halloweeny greatness. We help you ring in a spectacular Halloween with this simply lovely episode discussing cemeteries from all over the world with our good friend Paul Wilborn from the “Having Beers With” podcast. We chat about our personal visits to the local Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, Paul’s brush with Scottish ghosts (maybe…it could have happened) at Greyfriar’s Kirkyard in Edinburgh which is supposed to be so very haunted, and how both Paul and Kris visited St. Cuthbert’s Graveyard (also in Edinburgh). Just not at the same time. They even took the same damned Ghost Bus Tour. Again, two years apart. It is very highly recommended by both by the way.
Anyway, Paul also has an affinity for New Orleans (because family) cemeteries (because wicked cool) and knows way more than anyone else we know about the history of why people are buried the way they are in NOLA. Kris even pinpoints her “taphophile” beginnings from visiting a cemetery in Weaverville, CA, when she was a kid.
We also find out an ancestor of Kym’s actually started a cemetery for war veterans somewhere back east. That’s our Kym, always at the ready with a zinger story! We discuss some places we’d like to visit and wonder why more people don’t plan vacations around visiting cemeteries. C’mon. Why not? Kris ends the episode with some incredibly amazing (Oh…YES…INCREDIBLY AMAZING WE SAY!!!!…erm) facts about cemeteries. Ahem.
This blog is going to be devoted more to photos rather than a write up, so go ahead, plug into the podcast and you can follow along here to see what we’re talking about! Tony (and wife Heather, and brother Joe) is ready for a rousing card game with these two gals! Photo by Tony Adamo.
Kris and Kym go on location AGAIN, but this time it’s local. We have a rousing game of a Cards Against Humanity-inspired game with Joe, Tony, and Heather at their house. It was so fun even the spiders and the dogs joined in. Yep. You read it. Kris gets visited yet again by a dangling 8-legged monster (ok, it was a teeeeensy baby spider but seriously, Kris is DONE with the arachnids floating in her face).
This episode definitely has a NSFW and NSFK warning (not safe for work, and definitely not safe for kids) for good reason. If you’re a shade tight-assed, curmudgeonly, conservative, sensitive, humor-challenged, or juvenile (literally), you might just think about passing on this episode and join us next week for a tamer show about cemeteries.
There’s a LOT of laughing and a LOT of counting cards (Kris can’t seem to keep track of the rules), and a LOT of blushing (mostly on Joe’s part) as the raunchy jokes are flung with flailing arms and maniacal cackling. No. But that would have made a terrific video. Honestly though, the deeper we get into the weeds, the more wheezy giggles and gusty guffaws take over. So sit back, close your eyes and pretend you’re in the room playing along.
Coffee is always better with friends on game night!
Why are you still here? Go listen to the fun. Give in to your guilty pleasure. Allow yourself to fall to the dark side of CARDS AGAINST HALLOWEEN! Kris loves coffee so much. Kym does too, but she also loves her dignity. Photo by Kimberly Sickel, @riverdeer, at 500px
For all that is holy, please pretend this is goulash.
Basically an exact copy of Kris’ mantle.
Dressing up in costumes goes back as far as 2,000 years, starting with the Irish Celts and Samhain.
Sad floofy spider asks “Why you so scurred of me?”
Some might ask, “why GOULASH? Are you (((sure))) you have the right word? Is today’s podcast all about Halloween recipes? This makes no sense. We are all confused.”
To that we say, “We don’t know but it’s too late to change things NOW, we’re tired because it’s vurrry late and we procrastinated getting this thing written until two hours before it’s due and we are always confused, SO GET A GRIP.”
How very collegiate of us.
Let’s fill up a lot of space with other people’s words, shall we? Here’s what the free online dictionary has to say about it:
goulash (ˈɡuːlæʃ) (n)
Definition 1: A rich stew, originating in Hungary, made of beef, lamb, or veal, highly seasoned with paprika. Includes macaroni, onions, tomatoes.
Nope. We aren’t dedicating today’s podcast to a bowl of spicy meat.
Definition 2: A method of dealing, in the game of Bridge, in threes and fours without first shuffling the cards, to produce FREAK HANDS!
VERY CLOSE. Verrrrrrrrrry close. All this talk of “freak hands”, and the wanton dealing of cards with reckless abandon. Hmmm. Yes. It’s all very…ah…close.
Definition 3 – Hodgepodge;jumble.
Winner winner chicken dinner get that dog a bone!
Jumble. HODGEPODGE! (wot an amazing word, eh?) THAT’s why we chose “Halloween Goulash.” We knew deep down we were on the right track. Plus, it’s so much creepier sounding than Halloween Potpourri. We’re so glad it worked out. We are very lucky people.
Right. So today’s episode starts off super great. We are in Big Bear, still sitting on Kym’s mom’s deck, we’re enjoying the flora and fauna, we’re staying the course. We have our topics! We have our notes! We talk about the history of Halloween and Samhain and how the Irish totally invented the First Holiday of the HallowThanksMas Trifecta…
We ramble on about Halloween traditions and candy corn and our favorite movies to watch in October (Harry Potter anything, Hocus Pocus, Rocky Horror Picture Show, High Spirits, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah) and how much Netflix and other streaming video folks have a totally sucky holiday lineup this year…it’s all GREAT…things are BRILLIANT…we sound fairly EDUCATED (snirk)…
And then dangling, creeping, unfolding shit hits the fan.
We won’t tell you exactly HOW it hit, but once it flies things kind of go downhill. Oh, we try to bring it back ’round, try to push through – but in the end, let’s face it, we forgot a whole entire SEGMENT of the episode outline because of SAID SHIT.
That’s ok. There’s still quite a bit of (ahem) meat and potatoes (HAHAHHAHA!!! see what we did there???) (Editors note from Kris: There’s no potatoes in goulash.) (Author’s note: fuck off no one cares.)
((Does anyone actually believe there are two people writing this blog? No? Okeydokey.))
…there’s still quite a bit of substance to the rest of the episode, it just tends to be on the jumbly side of the definition of goulash, not so much the stewy side. A wee bit of the “freak hand” essence is revealed with a slight bouquet of chaos and subtle hint of insanity, paired with well-aged f-bombs.
Now lookey here. We’ve managed to write an entire blog about absolutely nothing, so you’d probably be better off getting on over to HALLOWEEN GOULASH on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Libsyn, Pocket Casts, Stitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts. Then all you need to do is 1) subscribe 2) download and 3) listen! AND!!! 4) If you enjoy what you hear, please leave a rating and a review (pretty please?).
