Sound of Music!

Today’s episode “Sound of Music” is on Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Hey folks, let’s get the preliminary 10-minute chitchat out of the away: Covid-19, Quarantine, TikTok, California Jail System. Now let’s get to the meat and potatoes of today’s episode: MUSIC. If you’re like us, music is a big part of your life. Music has a way of getting into your soul, mixing it all up, and afterwards, you’re ever so slightly changed. Want to get pissed, pumped, inspired, uplifted, cry like a baby, tell someone how you feel when you can’t find the words, dance like nobody’s watching? There’s a playlist just waiting to be made for ALL of that. Music is the language of the universe that has the power to bridge the gap between any two (or more) people wherever they meet somewhere in this world of ours. Music reaches into us on a cellular level. That’s powerful. That’s magical.

AND if you’re like us, you need to a shot of positivity right about now. So, today we talk about some of the music that we’ve been listening to lately…music that has helped us connect with our happier selves.

Today’s list is just a mere shaving off the top of the whole library of killer music we love. We could probably do an entire year of just talking about music, but for now, here’s a start.

There’s a method to our madness below. 1. If there’s an official band video, we’ll embed that. You might have to deal with ads. (Just click the Skip Ad option when it pops up.) 2. We’ll use the title for each song to link the page the embedded video is from.

We’ll kick this one off with Kym’s list of booty-shakin’ shower-singin’ songs:

Imagine Dragons: On Top of the World

Imagine Dragons, On Top of the World, from Night Visions album, 2013, Interscope records.

Modest Mouse: Float On

Modest Mouse, Float On, from Good News for People Who Love Bad News album, 2004, Epic records.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: I Won’t Back Down

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I Won’t Back Down, from Full Moon Fever album, 1989, MCA records.

Sam Hunt: House Party

Sam Hunt, House Party, from Montevallo album, 2014, MCA Nashville records.

Ziggy Marley ft. Sean Paul: Three Little Birds

Ziggy Marley ft. Sean Paul, Three Little Birds

Imagine Dragons: Thunder

Imagine Dragons, Thunder, from Evolve album, 2017, Interscope records.

Panic! At The Disco: High Hopes

Panic! At the Disco, High Hopes, from Pray for the Wicked album, 2018, Fueled by Ramen records.

Ylvis: The Fox (yes we did)

Ylvis, The Fox, single, 2013, EMI Norway records.

Now let’s hear with other fox had to sa…. BWAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAA. See? These are the things you get to do when you write the blog.

Anyway, here’s Kris’ list:

The Five Stairsteps: O-o-h Child

The Five Stairsteps, O-o-h Child, from Stairsteps album, 1970, Buddah records.

Garth Brooks: The River

Garth Brooks, The River, from Ropin’ the Wind album, 1992, Liberty records. Garth isn’t readily available in official content on YouTube or iTunes. Kris is vurrrrry sad as she used to have this song on disc but it’s long gone, and she can’t buy it on iTunes. Sad emoji. Anyway. Take the time to listen to his intro, because the song is worth hearing even if it isn’t the original, official version.

Foo Fighters: Times Like These

Foo Fighters, Times Like These, from One by One album, 2003, RCA records.

(Bonus) Foo Fighters: Learn To Fly

Foo Fighters, Learn to Fly, from There is Nothing Left to Lose album, 1999, RCA records. This song is roll-your-windows-down awesome and deserves a spot here not just for that, but because this is still one of the very best videos ever made in videoland ever. EVER.

Alicia Keys: Girl on Fire

Alicia Keys, Girl on Fire, from Girl on Fire album, 2012, RCA records.

Blue Swede: Hooked on a Feeling (Ooga Chaka!)

All American Rejects, Move Along, from Move Along album, 2005, Interscope records.

(Bonus) Bill Withers: Lovely Day

Breathe In, Breathe Out

Today’s episode “Breathe In, Breathe out” is on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, SpotifyOvercast, Libsyn, Pocket CastStitcher, iHeartRadio, or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today we talk about the myths and benefits of meditation. You don’t have to sit cross legged, atop a peaceful, grassy knoll, detaching in transcendental bliss for hours at a time. Just a few minutes a day can bring you a connection to your true self, decrease anxiety and stress, and improve overall health. If Deepak Chopra says it’s true, we believe him.

We talk about how anyone can benefit from meditation…anyone. While meditation is commonly associated with spiritualism, Buddhism, Yoga, don’t let the stereotypes keep you from trying this truly beneficial practice. People of all faiths (or no faith at all) practice meditation. Busy, hard-working people meditate. You don’t have to wear flowy robes and loose pants (though we aren’t saying no to that, tbh) sitting in a garden with your eyes closed for hours every day to be good at meditating.

Repeat after us: Anyone. Can. Meditate.

And we believe everyone should.

The trick is making it a priority and practicing regularly. Ok…so we know it sounded too good to be true. But honestly, how difficult is 3, 5, 10 minutes a day to focus on breathing in, breathing out, breathing in, breathing out? Not really. So, yeah, it takes discipline, but not a whole bunch. And the possibilities of all the goodness that comes with meditation are pretty numerous. Like we said, if more political groups across the world had meditation, 10-minute massages, puppies and a couple warm chocolate chip cookies before meeting, we would all be existing on a better globe. Congress, call us.

Probably the best thing we can tell you, is that at chopra.com, you still have time to register for the Deepak Chopra/Oprah Winfrey 21-day meditation challenge! It starts on February 3rd, and best news of all: IT’S FREE. Kris and Kym like benefits for free. It doesn’t get better than that.

And here we are at the place where we give you more information about all the good things we talk about…drumroll…the resource list:

  • The Myths. Go ahead and Google “myths about meditation. You’ll get a LOT of articles offering TONS of writeups. But really, all we needed was Deepak Chopra’s article 7 Myths of Meditation at chopra.com.
  • The Apps. For meditation apps, check out verywellmind.com‘s article 8 Best Meditation Apps of 2020 for a starting point.
  • Our Personal Favorite App – NOT on the list above – is called Relax Melodies which can be found in Apple’s App Store (and maybe Google’s app store as well, we don’t know as we’re iPhone gals). You can also check out their website here. The basic version is free, but Kris found the premium version worth the upgrade cost.
  • Dan Harris. Dan wrote his book Ten Percent Happier outlining his path of recovery and serenity via meditation practices after suffering a full blown, on-air panic attack in June 2004. This is a good one for all the skeptics out there. Dan was HIGHLY raised-eyebrow/side-eye about the whole thing, but because he pushed through his personal misconceptions and doubts, his life is a bit more than 10% happier. Kris first learned about him after listening to the Audible audiobook version of Ten Percent Happier. Recommend: 10/10!
  • Sleep Meditations. Kym’s go-to guy on YouTube for guided sleep meditations is Jason Stephenson. Check out this playlist of his guided meditations.
  • Corpse Pose. Welp. Since Kris doesn’t practice yoga, we can’t fault her too harshly for not knowing the correct way to do the corpse pose is not face down, but lying on your back, face up. She’s a true crime fiend…not surprising she envisioned corpse pose face down. In a pool. With a knife in the back. Here’s what it really is and how to do it. Tsk Kris. Making everything about murder. All the time.
  • Haven Gastropub in Orange. Excuse us. It’s Haven Craft Kitchen+Bar. Pffft, only plebs call it a gastropub. Anyway. Expensive coffee, but they’ll let you use their bathroom if you look desperate enough.
  • Schweddy Balls. Because we HAVE to link to Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon’s NPR Saturday Night Live sketch with Alec Baldwin. WE HAVE TO. It’s the law.

Episodes

That’s What SHE Saw!

Today’s “That’s What SHE Saw!” episode is on  iTunes/Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastLibsynPocket CastStitcher or anywhere you listen to podcasts.

Today’s episode is a PLOT TWIST like no other in The Mugly Truth Podcast lineup. Remember that heartfelt, tear-jerker “Let It Go” episode from two weeks ago? The one where Kris and Kym talk about letting go of loved ones and past hurts, among other things? Well. Today’s episode takes that episode and says, “Really? Hold my crystal ball.” Cracks knuckles. Proceeds to OMG all over the place.

Soooo, we went to a psychic. It’s one of those things lots of people maybe think about doing but don’t. It’s a curiosity, or a guilty pleasure, never indulged in. Maybe because it goes against their religion, or their sense of propriety, or intelligence. Or they’re scared of what they might hear. Many pooh-pooh the whole thing as folly and even judge those who walk over the threshold of a palm reader’s door or through the oddly satisfyingly clicky bead curtains toward a tarot deck as silly, weak, or foolish. But tell us: what is the Universe capable of with all its secrets? Oh, you don’t know? It’s ok. Neither do we. In fact, we’re going to go out on a limb and say the greatest minds on this planet have yet to fully understand the actual magnitude of what goes on “out there” (again, we are just guessing…we can’t reach Neil DeGrasse Tyson for comment). Whether it’s quantum physics or the sacred ceremonies, rites, and rituals of faith, we’re thinking it is ALL pretty magical.

For those who believe that the Universe holds so many mysteries that we puny humans won’t ever be able to unclench enough to be able to accept all the things that bubble just beyond the veil of our limited material sight, we salute you for cracking open that lovely third eye of yours. Yes, energies, guides, angels – GHOSTS! – that’s a list that will raise the eyebrow of many, even those who are still rubbing the sleep out of Eye #3. We’re not sure how one group who follows the moral briefings of a book and another group who believes in a connection with their higher self and the spirit of everything in and around them are very different at all. It’s all faith in something beyond ourselves, something that transcends pages, pulpits, and meditative prayer. In the scheme of things there’s room for all of it, frankly. It’s what makes this plane of existence interesting. But HEY. Whatever your belief systems are, today’s episode is for fun and for free, and the fact is some WEIRDLY coincidental (really though? Was it?) crap totally went down and we recorded our reactions shortly after the readings.

The person we went to has been in business in our area for almost 30 years and when we talked about doing this type of episode she was the unquestionable go-to for the reading. Just like our dancing around the issue of ghosts and spirits, we went into this with no expectations, a little bit skeptical, and we provided zero, zilch, nada, nuffink in the information department.

We called for the appointment (two separate appointments, we didn’t go together) and when we showed up, we each forked over a personal item for her to hold during the session. Then we literally sat back and listened. It bears repeating, we provided no information at the time of booking the appointment (except our names, okay, yeah, that). And when we went in, we said nothing and she asked nothing. She just held our trinkets and began to speak. Don’t get us wrong. Our lovely psychic said some pretty generic things to kick things off (apparently we are both honest women. We are nodding piously. But…

But then the weirdness hit.

There’s too much to write here. (This is a podcast after all…go listen…it’s all there, including the lovely twitterings of birds and whoomphphphs of horses in the background. And planes. And helicopters. Always helicopters. Why Orange County airspace? WHY?). It’s really hard to put into writing, even two weeks later after time has passed and we’ve processed what she said. Because the things this lady said to both of us, these are things she did NOT have enough time logistically to find out about us.

Scour our Facebook and Instagram pages, listen to EVERY episode of this podcast, you do a deep dive and yeah, there’s a chance you could fool even the hardiest skeptic, we totally agree with that. But did this woman have that kind of time? There were over 40 episodes at the time of our appointment for cripe’s sake, and less than a week to listen to them all. All that datamining for a measly $50? We just don’t see it.

And it wasn’t the obvious stuff she pegged. It was the stuff we DON’T talk about publicly, or post on social media that she zoned right into. That’s the weirdness right there. And she brought up some things both of us had been thinking about a lot lately, but not openly discussed.

Finally, (holding the mic so tightly), the “Let It Go” episode was recorded the week prior, but was not released until the week AFTER we saw the psychic. If you haven’t heard “Let It Go” yet, do that first. THEN listen to this one. Again, she had no way of knowing what we talked about because IT HAD NOT AIRED YET. (Read that in Ryan Bergara’s voice. If you do not know who that is, are we even friends???)

Drop.

Mic.

Shiver. Gigggle. SHIIIIIVVVVVERgiggle. Teehee. We love this sh*t.

Oh, and she basically told Kris the same exact thing Kris dreamed about the night before.

WAAAAAT??

We’re not chilled, YOU’RE CHILLED!! Like. Soda. On. Ice.
